Googling shows the nut is part # NH614041 and I get this info:
Nut, Hex - UNF - Thread Dia in 1/16" (14/16th = 7/8") - length in 1/8" (4/8ths = 1/4") |

Great thanks for that. After a lot of measuring, and trying to understand non-metric (I'm a metric person) it does appear to be UNF 7/8 x 14 thread. So I've ordered a tap and die. Will report back when they arrive.

Seldom if ever have I seen such a jumble of confused and meaningless non-data! This is why the Internet needs to be treated with care! Not a dig at Diesel Jim, by the way, but a dig at wherever this rot came from. |

Jim's decoded the nut's part number according to the British Leyland code:

Interesting link, thank you, I was unaware of this.
If the PN is NH614041, using the link the p/n decodes as follows: N = Nut H = Hex 6 = thread = UNF 14= diameter in units of 1/16" = 14/16" = 7/8" 0 = Steel 4 = medium tensile (precision) 1 = undefined, possibly revision number. So it is 7/8" UNF steel full nut, probably SAE-5(8.8 ), in which case it would take a 1.5/16" AF spanner. If it was a 7/8" UNF 'heavy' steel full nut, the spanner size would be 1.7/16"AF. |

The socket I used to take the nut off was indeed a 1.5/16″AF. I got it here, when I bought my Sumo bar upgrade.

My Tap and Die arrived today, and I can confirm that it is the right size. So nicely cleaned up the nut, having tried to fit it and it didn't fit, and cleaned the spindle thread.
