Coolant, rad & thermostat change…Now runs even hotter!
Hi,
Recently done a coolant change as doing a full service and before this the coolant temp on my ultraguage would run between 85 and 88 degrees on all sorts of different driving.

With the new coolant that is a premixed OAT it now runs worryingly hotter! Around 87 to 99!!
I’ve tried bleeding and have a steady flow of coolant from the bleed screw when I do the procedure whilst parked uphill.

Is this normal?

Any help would be great…maybe a different way to bleed rather than the puma workshop manual way?

I’m assuming you had the the heater valve on hot when you did the bleed. I’m just wondering if you have any air in the heater matrix / valve stopping full coolant circulation.

Ps. When I changed the coolant I bled from the oil cooler as on my 2.2 I don’t have a fuel cooler. As I was also changing the radiator I then removed the radiator hoses and a lot of coolant flowed from the bottom hoses. So to get all the old coolant out you do need to remove a bottom radiator hose.

As to whether draining the radiator helps with expelling air when refilling I don’t know but given you would have had coolant in the rad when refilling I’m wondering if you have a pocket of air in the top of the radiator.

Ok now I’m struggling!
Purchased a coolant overfill cone to fully burp the system.
Done it about 5 or 6 times now with getting it to temp and burping.
Tried uphill and downhill but it keeps running hot!
It seems to have air in the system every time i burp it but I estimated I’ve now put 12 litres of coolant in so the air should be at a minimum!! I also don’t lose coolant when the system is closed off under normal driving, however I’m still in the 92 degree mark and that’s only after a 20 min drive with no weight and staying out of 6th gear!

Could it still just be air or is there some thing else it could be?
There is no obvious noises when it’s running.

I do get hot air from cabin at idle but it does fluctuate a little between hot and really hot when on max and up to temp.

No I wouldn’t say so.
I recently changed the engine temp stat and have an ultra gauge that seems to show the temp well.
I had this setup before the coolant so assume it’s not faulty stats.
Could it be water pump or rad isssue??

I believe there is also a thermostat in the water pump assembly.
It is worth to clean the fins of the rad too.
Is the fan working ok?

I am not sure if yours still came with a thermostat in the oil cooler as well. Puma 110" SW

Afaik there is only one thermostat, neither in the pump nor in the oil cooler is one (fortunately).
As for the problem, it may be that the proportion of frost- and corrosion-protection in the fresh coolingwater is now higher and therefore other temperatures prevail, because the heat capacity of the fluid has changed.
How old was your old fluid and did you measure frost-safety or did you top up coolingwater?

Well, mine being one of the early Pumas, came with 3 thermostats.

Anyway, If you have been using the proper coolant, I doubt you will find significant corrosion. Puma 110" SW

I am at a total loss now!! Need help with this one.
Decided to drain system and start again.
Fitted a new thermostat (82 degree) and radiator to cross off all possibilities.
Bled several times and even used a vacuum pump (even though it wasn’t great) so air in the system is at a minimum!

Put all back together and went for a drive.

Temp now gets to 105 and no heat from heater!

What else could it be??

How many liters of coolant did you use?
Did you use the bleeding screw located in one the hoses?
Water pump?
Stuck thermostat in the water pump?
why you do not get heat from the heater?
Is viscous fan working ok? Puma 110" SW

So far it’s had around 11 litres put back in.
Coolant was first refilled using a vacuum but after the vacuum had gone it had only put in 4 litres, so I carried on the filling process filling the reservoir. I then burped the system using a coolant overfill kit and waited for the air bubbles to expel out which I’ve done several times this eve.

Checked water pump, no obvious leaks or sounds…how else can I test this?

The 1 thermostat the cooling system has is new fitted today so would be very unlucky if it’s that?

Fan is working great.

Only thing I did notice when the engine is running hot…the top rad hose is very hot, which is normal but the bottom hose is cold…not warm at all??

According to the LRW there is a thermostat located in the water pump assembly. Not that I have seen one yet.

I cannot remember, but your does not have a small thermostat at the end of the hose going into the oil cooler?

I rekon your water pump is not working, therefore you do not get hot coolant into the matrix and bottom of the radiator. Puma 110" SW

That is what I’m worried about so trying all possibilities before hand!
Think I’ll try waterpump first and see if that sorts!

Anyone that can give some advice / pointers on changing waterpump?
