Assume the heating elements have failed? Mine did on my Td5 Discovery and it only heated patches, like yours. New windscreen solved that problem. BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group

Time for a new screen. A new screen will clear a heavy frost in 5 minutes.

It is only normal when the screen is fubar, as others have noted, time for a new screen. What you need ideally is a huge stone chip or a crack in the swept area, since that would legitimately allow you to exercise the windscreen repair provision of your insurance (which sadly almost certainly won't cover element failure). |

Thanks all! Wanted to check this wasn’t expected first… I’ll go dig into what a replacement looks like

As noted, probably a screen required, BUT, check it is getting power first. There are fuses and relays in the system.

The fact that a narrow band is clearing correctly would suggest in this case that the screen is getting power.

It’s amazing how much damage a good belt to a centre punch can do…. |

Finally getting round to sorting this and I think the insurance (NFU) will cover it… using one of Autoglass or national windscreens. I’d assume these are roughly equivalent… searching here I’ve mostly found older threads on them but I’ll keep looking. Also sounds like it’s worth replacing the seal with a genuine one at the same time…
https://www.lrparts.net/lr056278-windscree...-2016.html These seem to be unbelievably expensive (137 vs 9.50)! Definitely worth using genuine vs aftermarket? |

My local independent windscreen specialist told me when I last had a new screen fitted that originally the genuine seals were significantly superior to the aftermarket ones, being a different section which sealed better. However the more recent (post c.2014) seals were exactly the same as the aftermarket ones and had been "value engineered" or more likely re-sourced and that they were subsequently no better than aftermarket, just massively more expensive.
He recommended not changing an original seal in good condition since a new one was less likely to afford a good seal, but if the original seal had perished then an aftermarket was much better value that a new genuine seal. I still have the original 2007 seal on my Defender but it is perished and cracking especially round the corners and works hard to maintain a high level of humidity and wetness in the cab. When I next need a new screen it will definitely be replaced. |

That’s helpful - thanks. I’ll see what the installer has to say about it. Mine is a Sept 2014 vehicle so I could be either side of the good/bad seal line …

I swapped a non-heated screen for a heated one - I bought a heated screen and seal from VGS and got one of the local fitters to install it for me.
When he came, he said that he could have supplied and fitted for a similar cost to the VGS screen alone (£150 odd, a few years ago), and that the quality of seals is extremely variable. He didn't really like the look of the VGS supplied seal for some reason (too much slack or not enough?) and would have preferred to supply his own. He did fit it and it was fine from then on though. It may be worth ringing some local fitters, especially if there's excess and implications to claiming on insurance come renewal time - you may have to declare a windscreen claim. |
