2.4 Coolant engine warming pre and post 11MY.
one of the first things i noticed when i got my 11MY 110 was that it took longer to warm up than the previous 2.4. on a like for like drive it took roughly twice as long. when looking at the fuel cooler i saw the system was routed slightly differently too so sort of concluded that maybe the cooling system had changed on the 11MY vehicles.

didn't think much more about it.

First cold(ish) spell last thur and 25 mins of driving and it still wasnt even upto temp - this main road 40-50mph and it wasnt even below freezing! (about +3 or 4)

so it made me think, coupled with some comments reinforced by TJ101 this pm that maybe the termostat is stuck open or not working as it should.

So those with a 11MY Puma who had a pre 11MY puma or same spec etc - have you found the 11MY take longer to warm up?

this is a comparison over the last 12 mths rather than a few hundred miles. Cheers

I remapped a large fleet of new 110's earlier on this year, and a load of them had faulty thermostats. These were stuck closed though, and so would cause overheating.

It at least gave me a rare chance to see the overheat protection strategy kick in from the ecu! Mr. Green

They have the exact same thermostat as fitted to Td5, and according to our friendly local land rover parts department, these generally never go wrong. I suspect there may have been a sub standard batch get through the system though, and no doubt there may be a bulletin released shortly for the benefit of freezing defender owners. Rolling Eyes

I don't think mine takes much longer (if at all) to warm up than my 07 Puma did - IIRC it was about 10 - 15 mins today. John

Agreed 10-15 mins and it's ferocious once warmed up. The temp adjustment takes a while after turning the knob though!

Out of interest, does the heater work any better on the '11 MY Defender, ie is the temperature now stable, is it controllable, and is the air from the LH side outlet the same temperature as the RH side?

Or does it still fluctuate between ice and fire with nothing in-between, and scorch the passenger at the same time as freezing the driver, like the original Puma heater?

so with the heater running on full chat and the fan on pos 1 in start/stop traffic and upto 30mph does the engine temp go down with ambient around +3 to +5? Cheers

I had a TD5 that would never heat up past the blue and after my second winter of freezing my nuts off i complained about the cold engine. I was told that Defenders have two grades of thermostat, one for hotter climates and a colder (europe) unit. It was pointed out that a Defender has to cool a vehicle towing a 3.5 ton trailer through a desert and then cross ice and snow covered mountains.. no thermostat can cope with that range. Instant fix. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Getting the temp right is a constant fiddle helped only by the air con. With air-con off and the heating turned full on nothing or hardly anything comes through unless you turn the fan on Rolling Eyes It's a pain in the ass to be honest Rolling Eyes

Maybe worth mentioning as I spent a couple of days thinking my heater was broken but turning the air-con on automatically gives you fan position 1 (if it's set at 0)

Yes it seems the fan has to be on to get any effective heat through....the constant fan noise although not loud is annoying on a long journey...

Within 3 miles and warm air is coming out of the vents (a/c on) .
8 miles and the temp gauge is sitting just a smidge below halfway and stays there regardless of outside/inside temps.
Temperature control knob location (regardless of the red/blue graduation) is either hot, 'kin hot , very warm , cool or cold.
On every journey over 30 mins in duration I'm opening the window to help regulate the temperature.
Temp seems to be the same on driver or passenger side.

I was led to believe these are all features Smile

Timed mine this morning and warm air was coming out properly after 4 mins - pretty good and agree with you Stu, I either have to keep turning the air-con on and off or opening the window to adjust the temp Rolling Eyes

Heater on my 2011 Puma is more adjustable heatwise than the earlier 2008 Puma.It is possible to have a moderate heat than either an inferno or nothing. Also as with the 2008 it warms up very quickly.Great in this weather. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
