Calling Mantec Spare Wheel Carrier Owners. A Question.

Hello all Mantec spare wheel carrier owners.

Quick question. Once everything is mounted, the swinging arm and the fixing plate on the door, and they are connected, is there a way to release one from the other without fully unbolting or unscrewing the arm? i.e. is there a slide bolt or catch that allows for the carrier to be temporarily released and swung away from the door, without the door opening?

If it is possible, can someone please describe how it works? Or provide any photos? Ta. Be useful to know.

From my memory of having one.

There is a plate on the rear door. Onto that you bolt a tube, inside the tube is a plastic piston with a threaded bolt sticking out of end. The bolt that sticks ou goes through the part af the carrier that holds the wheel. So the plastic piston, and the bolt on the end joins the two bits together. If you undo the nut (actually two nuts, as lock nut) then poke piston back a bit yph will separate the carrier from the door.

Even writing this makes my shudder at the constant adjust of the Mantec. Please I’ve got the Nak one now.

Thanks for that. Makes it a bit clearer. Was looking to see if there was a quick release, with wheel on, rather than unbolting like this, and I’m guessing only once the wheel has been removed. It was for quick access to the tailgate, which I will swap to swing away at some point. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Assuming that you reviewing options, I have and have had a few options and this was my conclusion:

-anything hanging off or permanently connected to the door puts a lot of strain on what is quite a weak door especially if you have a habit of slamming it closed
-anything not connected to the door and therefor with two stage closing (door then secure the swing carrier) has a risk of you forgetting to secure the wheel. Therefor there needs to be restriction in swing to avoid the wheel potentially swinging open and hitting something or worse someone.

Overall I don't think there is an ideal solution. On my DCPU where there is the hatch, not a door, the wheel carrier is not connected but it has a door style latching mechanism which at least makes it quick to secure the wheel as you just close it, this is not too bad a solution I think even if you had a door. Not sure if someone made it or if it was purchased.

Have you got a photo? This is what I'm thinking I need to do/create. Inspiration would be great. Eventually I do want to swap my hatch for a 1/2 swing away door or add hinges to the hatch. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I'm pretty sure there was a version of the Mantec for pick-ups that wasn't connected to the door and latched and the left side of the tub. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

So I cannot find any make, not sure if this was home made. It works well with the pull handle and it latches so it quick and decisive to close

This is my series 88 CSW. To avoid drilling holes in the door I got (used) a swing away wheel carrier, but the latch being on the wrong side and a bit jammed, one day it released and swung open. It also made a banging noise against the door as it was not tight. I made the bar to lock it on the existing Antiluce latch.

I also added a bolt to stop it from swinging where it not be swinging
