Australia 1985 Defender 110 Other DCPU Baltic Blue
110 white smoke
Hi all,
I have a 110 county (4DB1).
Recently took it for its first long drive and was running really well, until I pulled into a servo and noticed that there’s a load of white smoke coming from under the hood, passenger side
Looks to be coming from the oil catch can / crankcase breather. There’s also oil in this general area and is dripping down the inside of the guard and onto the ground.
Water temp is at about 75 and exhaust gas temp sits at about 350 when cruising.

Any ideas ? First though is that this obviously isn’t good and could be the end of the engine

Assuming then this is a 200 tdi? How many miles?

Excessive crank case venting normally means bore/ring wear resulting in combustion blow-by. Although not as straight forward as with petrol engine, but you can do a compression test to check for engine health.

These engines are not that complicated and still quite common so you should be able to either overhaul or find a replacement engine.

I don’t have any experience with the Isuzu 4BD1, but I would start with cleaning the catch-can and replacing the PCV (if it has one?).

I would also check to see if oil is leaking on to the exhaust manifold. Charlie
