Puma Cutting out while idling
I live in Durban South Africa. My 2008 Puma cuts out while idling whether the engine is hot or cold. It starts normally and idles normally for a short while (about a minute or so) then the idle gets erratic (hunts) and then it cuts out. It will restart straight away, but the process mentioned above repeats itself. I have just had the Puma serviced, and complained of the above symptoms. Was told the ERG unit need to be replaced, which was replaced during the service. The problem has improved but has not been resolved, as it still cuts out while idling.

I have changed fuel types, but have the same problem. I have since checked for faults using the Hawkeye diagnostic tool. No faults recorded. I have a scangauge connected permanently. This also shows no faults. Any ideas to resolve the problem will be appreciated.

I would check the fuel filter has been fitted properly, those nasty 1/4 turn thing dont bite the seal properly sometimes, mine would not idle when Land Rover fitted 1 wrong but it also leaked when the tank was full showing me where to look. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I would also check that the filler cap breather isn't blocked or restricted.

Start up and wait until problem occurs. Before restarting, remove filler cap and note any sounds of air rushing in.

Leave filler cap off, keeping any flames or sparks away from tank, and start engine again. If it runs fine, there's your problem.

Sods law would sugest it won't be anything so simple, but it's a quick check and cost nothing but a few pence of fuel.

Do you find the problem occurs more quickly if you have a full or nearly full tank, as oppossed to one that's got, say half or less of a full tank?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses.

I have pushed and pulled all relays, plugs and connections, still the same problem.

I don't think it is the fuel filter sucking air, as it cut out both before and after the service. The filter was changed as part of the service.

I will check for suction on the fuel filler in the morning.

Any more suggestions will be appreciated.

To isolate possible breather problem in the fuel tank, just unscrew or remove the filler cap.

Since no DTC are detected, I think you could have a fuel feed problem. This kind of problem is usually not recognised by engine built in diagnostic.

Check the fuel feeding from the tank to the fuel filter. Detach the quick connect from the filter and blow compressed air into the feeding pipe.
Then do the fuel priming and check the idle. If OK, then you also need to clean the fuel tank.

Thanks for the latest response. I will look into blowing the fuel lines clean.

I was also wondering if either the Fuel Pressure Sensor or the Pressure Limiting Valve could be the culprits. Does anyone on the forum have experience with either of these two being faulty causing cutting out while idling. If they were faulty would a fault code always be reported?

Try taking the MAP sensor out and cleaning it with brake cleaner / petrol & a tooth brush,

Considering the likelihood of dodgy diesel in SA, I would also recommend you drop the tank and see if there's any gunk blocking the fuel pickup --

So after another successful trip to Angola, (4th trip but first trip with the Puma), on my return leg via Namibia, I filled the 180litres at Windhoek.

From Windhoek I drove to Rietfonetein border post. At the border post the Puma idle for short time and stopped. It started straight away but then after 5s to 20s seconds while at idle the engine stop. (While driving the Puma one do not have/feel any problems). It would also Idle sometimes erratically.

Now I had this before (Lastest was last year in Kaokoland , but not severe as this time) for a short period. Had to drain the fuel filter’s water trap 2 or 3 times but eventually it was sorted.
So this time I drained the water trap several time but the idle problem persisted.

In Sannieshof I replaced the fuel filter. It was better but still problematic and since had to drain the water trap several times.

Back home I decided to siphon the remaining 30l of diesel out of the tank as much as I can. Removed and emptied filter. Filled filter with new diesel and refit. Refilled with 50l new Diesel. Much much better.

Yesterday I drove to Sasolburg and drain the water trap twice just in case. Only once had the engine stopped at idle. And twice the Puma would idle erratically.

This morning return from Sasolburg and filled the tank.

Puma now idle normal.

There is not water in the diesel I have siphoned from the diesel tank. But definitely there is some problems with the diesel I siphoned from the tank.
If I have time I would like to send a sample to be analysed for interest sake

Abrie, you may still want to drop the tank, there may be gunk that is now partially blocking the fuel pick-up. You will not see this until you drop the tank and inspect the fuel inlet. --

Thanks for all the responses.

The problem seems to have improved at the moment, but still sometimes idles roughly first thing in the morning when cold. I suspect a temperature sensor, or something is not quite right with a cold engine. As the engine warms, the problem goes away. Could it possibly be a temperature sensor on its way out, but not malfunctioning sufficiently to show up as a fault?

It is possible that there is a faulty cylinder head temperature sensor at fault - you would need to run a scanner on this channel whilst the vehicle warmed-up from cold to see any drop-outs.

As others have already said here, it is more likely, therefore you should try this first, that you have a faulty fuel supply system. Something is warming-up with the engine, and starts to seal. You need to get to the source of the problem, something basic, rather than looking for electrical problems. Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

Just quick feedback...
Puma is still running 100% without erratic idle or cut out while idling after I siphoned the 30l of diesel from the tank (see first post)

I still want to get that diesel tested.

I got a qoute for R750 for this to be tested but did not yet decide on this 1997 Land Rover Defender 110 HT 2.8i

Good Day. I am new too this forum and Afrikaans, so please pardon my spelling Sad . I resignedly Have the same problem of my puma not wanting to idle. I have striped the poor beast to the bone and jet could not find the fault. I have taken of the loudbay to asses the fuel pump and see it there is any junk in the tank. nothing, spotless!

I have done all the connectors and replaced the ignition switch. I will now drain the tank and flush the lines and replace the filter. see if that works
