The point you raise about the life of the ecu and maps was one i came across a few years back..
My understanding after asking around was that the ecu can be flashed pretty well indefinitely...but it does have a finite life in terms of the number of different maps that it can have loaded..
The number that comes to mind is 15..but I can't remember where I read that.. I'll have a look..👍
But you can change between different maps as many times as you wish..

I wouldn’t recommend switching maps unless you really have to though, there is a risk that the data transfer could corrupt or fail and lock up the ECM. A small risk but it does happen. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Never had an issue with changing maps .most companies now offer the choice of a device that you keep and allows you to flash with whatever map you want..you have to pay for the different maps of course and the devices I've had only catered for two maps.and one of them is the original..
In practice though once you have o map that suits its seldom changed..
In theory I can revert to a standard map, in practice that's not going to happen as some of the hardware and functions on a standard map are physically now removed so you would generate fault codes..
