I have a D250 and have never found it lacking. I didn't notice any major difference over the D300. I'm an old school driver that overtakes a lot and have never found it wanting. I also do lots of trans European trips and it's brilliant. However, sounds like you want more so the choice is D350, P400 or V8. As for spec it then it depends on the image - County lines dealer, footballer, school mum or old money understated Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy. |

D350 has 700Nm torque and sub 6 seconds to 60 in the 90 model. That’s quick MY25 90 D350 X-Dynamic HSE in Silicon Silver and coil sprung

If I was in the market to purchase a brand new car I would pay close attention to residual value/depreciation and I would not gamble on a diesel. The politics promote electric, maybe petrol hybrid but definitely not Diesel. I think you will find the amount of people willing to take on a diesel will diminish over time while the supply of good used diesel cars will increase.

I’ve gone the other way. I was looking at a petrol hybrid or full electric and I’ve opted for the diesel due to mpg on the petrol towing a caravan and the drop in electric values here in the UK.

l've also got a D250. Plenty fast enough (go for the D300/350 if it isn't enough for you)
MPG is around 28 round town, 40 on a longer journey. |

D250 is plenty powerful enough, not read any comments suggesting otherwise. If you’ve been used to the V8 then D350 it is. There isn’t much choice regarding spec they all seem to be X-Dynamics, coming from a Range Rover then X-Dynamic HSE or X would be the logical choice. Personally I find less is more on Defender. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

I have just made the same decision. My L405 SDV8 autobiography has been my best ever car but sadly its going for trade in next week for a P400e Defender HSE. I will really miss that car! Cant believe the 400e is actually faster 0-60 though (5.6 sec)
I do a lot of short trips and 10kpa so a plug in works for me. My default would have been the D300 but im increasingly concerned at all the towns and cities turning anti diesel. I think this will accelerate and the residuals on the Diesels will plummit (but who really knows). The P400e is in increasingly shorter supply as LR are changing their mix line up for MY25 to meet EU mix regs. So they cut the P400e from the Defender line up by dumming it down to a p300e. |

Lots of food for thought! I will definitely miss my L405 it’s an Autobiography with many extras but it’s not getting younger. I test drove the p400 and imho is the worst of the options when it comes to on road driving.
I am not even talking about consumption ( 16.8mpg after my test drive). My concern is the engineers have added weight without balancing the car on the road. Feels heavier than the diesel, roll is more and even the suspensions on air are very bumpy on small obstacles. It also feels like they have used the same gearbox ratio of the diesel engine and it’s not as fluid as you would expect from a Petrol 6 in line. It’s faster by the clock but not really feeling much when accelerating from standstill. The least powerful of the available diesel has got more torque than the most powerful petrol Hybrid. A lot of difference in terms of how the power and the torque is delivered. The diesel feels like a truck. It sounds nice and pull strong. It’s perfectly mated to the box and it’s a relaxing drive for wafting along. I bet the V8 gets both of the 2 worlds: wafting along and acceleration when needed and bonus soundtrack.in my list, V8, any of the diesel, P400. |

For me it's about MPG more than anything. l would rather have petrol (although the Defender 6 cylinder diesel is a lovely engine, with no diesel clatter even when cold)
But 16mpg in city driving wouldn't do it for me. And l think the Defender suits a diesel engine, just like the old one did. For me, it's not a vehicle to accelerate from 0-60 in under six seconds. For that l would buy a BMW or similar. l've never used the full acceleration from a standing start in my Defender. But that's just me. l know people like performance. And also l have come from the old Defender, so the D250 feels very strong, with twice the BHP and a lot more torque. lf my previous vehicle was a Range Rover V8 then l might feel differently. |

Diesel not much better though. Mine has got less the 100 miles on the clock but around town it’s showing 20.3mpg. It can possibly improve slightly but not miracles. My T6.1 btdi with a 2L diesel and same weight it’s around the same Mpg.

looking at the Autotrader stats the P400e shows expected mpg of 80? but you had 16.8 in real world test?
