Defenetly GL-5.
I use mineral oil for the front ATB and synthetic for the transfer case (with ATB) as it does not degrade that fast due to high temperatures (at least where I use it). Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

Gl5 not recommend for any parts that contain yellow metals (brass).
I’d check with the manufacturer what they recommend. |

On a Std LT230 with "yellow" thrust washers I use GL-4. Puma 110" SW

Differential bias effect on the central (ATB) diff on the transfer case is negligible, so synthetic GL5 is good for me. Puma 110" SW

Funny how they say pre and post td5 even tho they at both lt230s... Ive always used GL4 EP90 Mineral in diffs and Lt230. Probably the last 50k miles or more. As suggested by Nige at Xcess4x4. Or if you have expensive diffs then use swepco. Cant comment on diffs but it does make the R380 smoother. Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

I would not use GL4 in a (hypoid) diff. Puma 110" SW

I believe that the Rover differential is a spiral bevel gear.
Not so familiar with Salisbury, but by the external look of the pinion flange, that looks hypoid. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

There is a bit of an offset from the center. AFAIK
Anyway, synthetic gear oil lasts longer on the lt230 subjected to high temperatures. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

Just an ATB up front and ATB in the transfer case. Wincheser also suggested SwepCo. A decent EP80/90 mineral as suggested by Winchester/Ashcrofts should do the job. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
