Usually there is a drain hole, so that if the seal leaks, the bearing does not fail.

Thanks for your quick reply. This hole is definitely beneath when it’s installed which makes it an odd place for a nipple fitting.

That’s because it’s not one, it’s a drain hole as above. When water leaks out, you know the pump is failing.
