So, I have fallen foul of fitting a replacement pulley to Miffy without checking whether the bearing inside the pulley had any grease. Nope, pretty much dry as a bone in there. So I have greased it, but it will need replacing at the next service.
The pulleys in question are: ERR6658 - Idler pulley all engines. ERR6493 - Idler pulley non-AC I suspect they are the same bearing inside, but does anyone else know for certain? Any bearing part numbers for SKF or Timken or alike? Ok, confirmation through a deep dive into the search panel gives me this thread
https://www.defender2.net/forum/post941642.html So both pulleys use the same bearing. That is one question answered. 
and the bearings both had 6303 LHA embossed on them, which is the same bearing, according to a Russian site as SKF 6303.2RSR.C3. So, looks like I am heading in the right direction. |

A bit of extra learning this evening. To tell you the truth I have never paid attention to what the numbers on bearings actually mean.
So the 6303 2RSR C3 code means: The '6' = Deep groove ball bearing (single row) - Suitable for light axial loads as well as radial loads. '303' = Bore diameter I believe '2RS' = Bearing with rubber seal on both sides. RS provides a better seal but more rolling friction than 2Z (Bearing with metal seal on both sides) '2' = TBC C3 = Internal clearance code. Fascinating really, well it is to me anyway. |

And probably will be for quite some time I would expect.

I believe this is where my issue stems from. Poor quality bearings that may or may not have been greased. The pulleys seem fine and I hate to throw away perfectly serviceable items, hence replacing the faulty bearings.
Goodness, prices go up and quality goes down... |

Bearings ordered
£11 all in for a pair of Timken bearings. Cannot complain at that price.
Buying the full pulleys would cost £55.05 before P&P for Britpart items and a whooping £159.61 for LR items 
Just need a little vice and drift action and job done. |

I did a similar exercise not too long ago on my 2.4 Puma and replaced nearly all of the supposedly non-replaceable bearings. It was relatively quick, relatively cheap, and hugely satisfying!
