Thanks chap, sorry, I meant to say, I'm OK with the more 'normal/obvious' stuff....ie car-buying related (HPI/service history/tyres/rust, etc).
AA check ok with these, do you think? I mean, do they know enough, generally about Def's? Mark 2011 110 XS DC Stornoway Grey |

I would try and buy from a passionate owner who has thorughly maintained the vehicle, waxoiled etc.
Do not buy from a 'pikey' on ebay!! Don't be tempted to a buy a vehicle you haven't seen!! A lot of people do!! There are some good dealers around, James French, Nene Overland etc - you pay more, but hopefully get a solid vehicle. I don't think there are any particular mechanical problems to worry about. Thanks John, but she really needs a 110 and has said she'd like as new as possible (sadly as I love the T/R's!).
I live about 7 miles from J French and although on here he seems to have a good rep, his prices are astronomical really....example, I paid the same for my 99 mile DC xs from main dealer as he was asking for an '08 with 30k on it! I know from experience defenders hold their money, but that's just silly Oh, and don't worry folks, I'll never, ever buy any car without seeing it first! Good to hear there aren't too many issues so far though Mark 2011 110 XS DC Stornoway Grey |

Considering the youngest Td5s are nearly 7 years old now that could be quite a rarity. |

It is a bit of a minefield buying any older Land Rover. Ideally, but one with a single owner who hasn't been afraid to open his wallet. Most people tend to sell Defenders once they start costing in terms of repairs, or the chassis is is about to render the vehicle an MOT failure.
I also think your sister needs to keep some money back for its after sale repairs. She wouldn't be the first person to find her Defender's R380 full of water. |

Cobblers. I've seen plenty of LRs 10+ years old with FSH. The latter ones probably won't be main dealer, but that's probably a good thing IMO The last Td5s were '07 plate, so 4.5 years old. Last of the cheap road tax would be an early 2006 '55 plate - like mine For a 110 CSW with low-ish miles you're looking at the £15k region. That's what I paid for mine 6 months ago - '55 plate CSW (not XS) with 45k on the clock, FSH, from an independent. I'd agree with not buying one off a pikey on ebay. Find a dealer you trust. The other thing I learnt is be prepared to travel. This depends a bit on where you live, but I ended up going to a dealer 150 miles away simply because where I live (the middle of nowhere) all the dealers jack their prices up to take advantage of the captive audience. Good luck! |

Took a couple of months before we managed to get ours - they seemed to vanish off the forecourts or websites within 24 hours !
Paid 16.5k for our 06 90 CSW XS last October - had 40k on the clock, immaculate, one owner with FSH from selling dealer - Lookers in Bishop Stortford - 70+ miles away so as said be prepared to travel ... Jon |

Agree with twopoint entirely - mine is also the last of the cheap road tax 2005 on a '55 plate. I also paid £15k just over a year ago, although mine is a 90 csw not a 110, but had only done 18k when I bought it. Took me an awful lot of searching to find it, and, like twopoint, I also had to travel 175 miles each way to view it and then collect it a week later, but I was happy to do that to get my ideal vehicle. Mine also has a full service history, having done around 3000 miles between services - initially serviced by main dealer and latterly by a local independent. The independent dealer I bought it from knew the history of the vehicle completely, as it had been in the local area - which gave me a lot of confidence. Basically - there are plenty of good ones out there, they can just take a bit of finding! Found mine through AutoTrader, so it's always worth using the main channels rather than thinking you have to be more specialised. Hope you find what you're looking for soon! 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green |

In terms of 'known issues', I think most of the early problems with the Td5 (of which there were few anyway) had been fixed by the end of its run - e.g. metal dowels holding the head in position, replacement injector looms etc. I've had two and not had any trouble from engine or transmission, seems bulletproof Mind you it bloody well ought to be, most of it had been in production since about 1996
The one thing I would say is maybe keep a wee bit of money back for doing it up - depends on what she's using it for of course, but if it's going to be predominantly a car then some soundproofing and a 1.22:1 transfer box could be a good move. Gearing on Td5s is much lower than the Puma due to the lack of 6th gear |
