I've seen a replacement console that has adjustable centre vents.
My wife just stuffed a small sock into the vent! |

Only seen double din facia with adjustable vents. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

 To be honest, it’s my wife who’s got more of an issue with it than me!! She’s tried a hat (over the vent, not wearing it!) various pieces of paper, even a stack of dairy milk bars, but she hasn’t tried the sock fix.

I don't think there's an easy solution other than shoving a sock down the vent pipe behind the dash. (If you unscrew and pull out the centre panel you can stuff your socks into the pipe itself).
I've always found those centre vents, all four of them, a bit naff and unsatisfactory. For more than ten years I've been failing to get round to doing something about it! My plan is to modify the heater airbox so that the centre fixed vents are deleted and the directional round vents are always unheated fresh air. It's do-able, (certainly on my non-AC airbox, but involved and time-consuming. |

Is the removal of the centre panel a straightforward job?

Changing the airflow direction using the right knob usually helps with this problem. You can get a mix between blowing on the windscreen and toward the face/feet.

Two screws with Torx socket heads, then CAREFULLY pry the panel forwards (there are clips as well as the screws) and free. There are many wires to the switches, radio, etc., so take care. You can usually get a couple of inches without disconnecting anything. |

3D print a plug and glue in on the actual aircon vents inside the dash? --

Make up some kind of deflector to change the airflow direction that fits on the outside?

I think, ideally I’d like to somehow deflect the airflow rather than stop it altogether. That was also the idea of the wife’s dairy milk deflector shield!

Yes, the ideal would be instead of the airflow aimed at the gearlever, it should be re-directed upwards and towards the windoes, so that the cool air then descends into the cabin onto the occupants.
