So, if you crank it in gear, the vehicle moves? Trying to rule out the gearbox output shaft adapter if it is indeed a Puma. Puma 110" SW

OK
Yes, you can drive without the clutch but it is stressful and a bit dangerous I would say. I guess your only option is to find a decent clutch kit and replace it. In this forum you will find numerous threads about clutch failures and how to proceed+ infamous gearbox adapter. EDIT. From the pictures on your gallery I see it is not a Puma Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. What engine and gearbox do you have? IS it a pre TD5? thinking TDI clutch fork/pivot...
EDIT: ignore that, if your pedal feels ok then it isn't the fork as usually the pedal sticks to the floor and does not rise. |

Yes, many times, it's not difficult. Starting and stopping is a pain and to be avoided if possible but when moving the clutch really isn't needed. It helps if you drive hire cars a lot in your youth since they are ideal for practicing. Most rally drivers back in the day drove without using the clutch since it allows the right foot to be on the accelerator and the left foot on the brake, but this is a more advanced technique and not one for beginners. |

Pop it into 1st and low range, then you can start it in gear, and then once moving you can change up into high range.
You’ll be surprised how soon you get used to adjusting the revs and whilst applying slight pressure on the gear stick sliding it into the gear you want at the appropriate revs. Taking it out of gear is even easier, again apply slight pressure as you lift off and as soon as revs match it will pop out of gear. |

I got it recovered in the end. Wasn't worth any risk suspect the clutch release bearing is goosed😫.

Personally I would not recommend first low, since changing from low to high on the move even with the clutch is something many people have trouble with. Besides first gear (high range) is quite low enough to start the engine on any Defender or series LR, and especially so on the MT82 with it's wonderful low first. If, like me, you habitually double-declutch all gear changes, both up and down, (which I realise is slightly unlikely ) it's even easier since you can generally drive normally with the clutch pedal not doing anything when you press it and the gear changes will be smooth and quiet. |

I started in low to move it 300ft. In first gear. It seemed to be easy to get moving and less pressure on the system.. I had it recovered though..

Is it at a local garage? Have they given you timescales as to when you can resume your holiday?
Fingers crossed for you that you can get up and running soon. |
