How to determine if Defender needs new gearbox mounts
My 2007 Puma Defender 110 has 377,000kms and still has the original gearbox mounts. They are intact, but while doing a routine check, I'm wondering if they are a bit soft now.

Pushing on the transmission from below, I can move it up about 4mm. At rest the rubber part of the mounts distorts with the downward weight, so that the side profile changes from a rectangle to a rhomboid shape. I'm not noticing any problems, just looking at preventative maintenance, and if this is still "in spec"?

I’d imagine LR would suggest they are good for at least 80k miles, at a guess so I’d imagine yours are well over that.
Corregations help wear them.

You don’t hear so much about engine mounts, not many people have any issues with that.
Seems like they last extremely well!

I had the gearbox mounts changed on mine about 60k, I don’t think there was much point but they did have a little play in them I’d say a small amount is normal. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Rubber generally tend to harden with time, develop cracks (rot), and can delaminate from the metal backing.
My mounts, at almost 12 years are still soft, show no rot, and still intact, albeit they are also skewed in shape. I do not worry about them.

Note that there is a higher risk that the chassis around the mounting bracket that cracks than the mounting itself failing. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
