Td5 won't start in Waitrose!
Hi all,
I've got a 2002 Td5 that has just broken down in Waitrose Embarassed

I went to start it and it was as if the battery was flat as it was turning over very very slowly and then stopped turning over. I put jump leads on it and that didn't improve matters, it still turned over very slowly.
I bump started it and it started fine and drove 15 minutes back from Waitrose. I'm now home and it isn't turning over at all, the starter motor is just clicking.

I have cleaned up the battery terminals and leads (on the battery end) and the battery is reading 12.6 volts with the engine off so that would appear to be okay.

Any ideas of things to check?

And by earths Chris means the body, engine to chassis earth straps.

I would wager it's the starter solenoid, common for them to wear out and fail pretty suddenly. You can rebuild the solenoid with a kit Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Plenty to keep me busy...

Having just tried it again, I noticed that the temperature gauge moves all the way to hot when turning the ignition on and remains there (the engine is cold) which it has never done before.

All the earths have been cleaned up which has resolved the awol temperature gauge but not the starting.
Tapping the starter motor with a hammer and block of wood now has the starter motor turning over fast enough to start the engine so it looks like that is the cause of the problems.

I'll get a rebuild kit ordered.

On a TD5 you'll probably be able to overhaul the solenoid an solve the problem.

When I had a td5 I used to put new contacts in the solenoid on a yearly basis at £15 to prevent getting stranded.

Well done there Thumbs Up

Fingers crossed that the solenoid refurb kit fixes your slow turn-over. If you have to buy a replacement starter motor it is worth every penny to go with a Denso unit.

When I had this exact same issue (in Aldi) I put a jump lead from the engine to the battery and it was fine. It was down to the main earth point on the transfer box.

The solenoid rebuild kit didn't solve the problem so a new Denso unit was bought and that did solve the problem.
Never seen inside a starter motor before so took it apart and the windings(?) were really quite dirty and rusty. It has four brushes, two of which were completely worn away, the retaining spring on one of the others was broken, no surprise it didn't work. Don't know if you can buy the parts but its in the bin now.
