An independent I use has a few ideas on this. He says the following are contributing factors in his opinion.
Very thin oil being used in the engine. Low sump capacity accerbates this. The engine burns oil. No dipstick for owners to check level of oil. They are dependent on the warning light to come on to warn them of low oil level. By then it is too late. I was in today getting a timing belt sdone on a Defender 200 tdi and they were rebuilding a T/SDV6 engine which suffered "badly" from lack of oil. He says there maybe an inherent design/manufacturing fault but the issues he mentions are a contributing factor. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

With a redesigned bottom end. Let's wait and see how that goes before we cast judgement
