There is no steering angle sensor on 2.4...

You should have PCM, IPC and ABS... but i've never used a GAP tool.
Your Defender is fitted with the earlier Wabco set up, which apart from Shuttle Valve and Pump issues is normally quite reliable. I'd be checking all the wheel bearings for excess movement, and I'd reset all the sensor clearances. As intermittent faults are often casued by the sensors being on the limit of distance between the reluctor ring. You could try giving all 4 sensors a gentle tap to ensure they are pushed in far enough - no need to go mad and smack them with a lump hammer, but a gentle tap to ensure they are pushed in enough is fine. Great, thanks mate, all good information and much appreciated, I'll have a play with sensors next. I was probably just trying the easy bits first without getting jacks and spanners out!

No need to get the jack out or wheels off... are quite accessable. Just give them a gentle tap down with a little hammer. IRB

yep, just climbed underneath and checked sensors, you're absolutely right - the front nearside visibly drove home about 1mm or so after a tap with a nylon mallet.
Fingers crossed that might be it, won't know until a test drive tomorrow, but thanks again for that bit of advice that may have saved a lot of pain and expense. I hope not to be too much of a regular burden on this site, but its great to know there are people out there willing to share their Knowledge. Cheers |
