Hi,
the Autoterm heaters are a pretty good alternative to the Webasto heaters. Right now I´m thinking about an Autoterm 5D for my Puma, I've heard some good feedback so far. Take a look at tigerexped.de ( https://www.tigerexped.de/autoterm-flow-5d...ng-12v-acc ) too, they are the importers in Europe and have an amazing technical support. Naka sels a bracket, made for TDCi 2.2 or 2.4, the Montagehalter Webasto Thermotop EVO5 which will fit the Autoterm 5D as well: https://www.nakatanenga.de/elektro/geraete...evo5?c=115 Important note: the mounting bracket only fits if the air intake in the engine compartment has been adjusted (e.g. with the optimized air intake or the SN4 snorkel systems) Maybe there is another solution? I have been considering the same.
I have found them here, another EU dealer; https://www.autoterm.cz/it/prodotti/flow-5dbinar-5s12-diesel.html I have seen the bracket but I am RHD so it would be going the other side from the air intake. The 5D is a bit smaller that the TTC. 220/90/136 vs 235/106/163 respectively. That might give more options for mounting. Plenty of places on the chassis rails but I’m not sure if these units will like being submerged if crossing a river or ford….? |

Take care about the pump, at autoterm.cz they use a Bosch pump, at tigerexped they use the Thomas-pump.The Thomas pump is very quiet and has an integrated end stop.
Driving a RHD model is good for the airintake problem. Due to the smaller dimensions there will probably be more space... I´ve seen a Defender in Norway with an 5D mounted to the frame, more or less under the engine. It is by far not the optimal position for me, because of water (crossings) and the gigantic amount of salt they put on german roads while its cold. Good point regarding the pump.
I tried to sign up to see the pictures but I can’t seem to find the answer to the “are you a real human” question… 
I have 3 locations in mind; 1 in next to the heater blower. Maybe there is room on the RHD as I have seen a webasto mounted there but the air intake for the standard heater had to be modified for it to fit which I am not keen on doing. 2 in the rear wheel arch. I have the Gwyn Lewis mud guards so there is an area that stays out of the road spray etc specially with a extra bit of sealant  Click image to enlarge 3 behind the headlight on the left but there are some things behind there that would need relocating first. 2/3 the run of the hoses is longer than ideal, but it will only be loss of efficiency from the heater as long as there is a bypass valve installed for the engine coolant so it doesn’t have to take the extra long run. https://mvheating.co.uk/product/bypass-valve/ |

Click image to enlarge I´ll have a look under the bonet the next days, right now it´s too cold... The rear wheel arch is an interessting idea, never thought about it. A nice sideeffect are the warm exhaust gases coming from the 5D which could be used to warm up the Diesel filter. Greetings Defender 110 TD5

As a hint: you also have to think about removal and installation in case of a malfunction/troubleshooting.
I have my Thermo Top C in the usual place in the engine compartment and i am happy about it. There are certainly more elegant but less accessible places. The price difference to webasto is not significant, but the service network of autotherm is much thinner. Where do you see the advantage(s)? |

Hi Hornet,
the point of troubleshooting is very good! These days I had a look under the bonnet, you´re absolutely right.The place behind the right headlight might be nice, but the "usual" place is simply the more excisable one. I do have an Autoterm 2D and I´m very happy with it. So I thought, a second one is a good idea. The thinner service network is a point to think about, but so far I had no problems with it. I have one more information regarding the fuel pump arrangement. For over 10 years now I have the pump for my Websato TTC in the direct fuel supply line fitted with a T-piece after the filter, *without* direct extraction from the tank. I don't know if this would also work for 2.2l models, but it has been the perfect solution that works flawless since then and without having to intervene in the tank.
