On my (lardy) old 110, which had a HD armoured chassis and a full external cage, I fitted a pair of used military wolf XD 110 rear springs. These are stiff, but when loaded up they gave a nice lift (Which I like the look of) and a good ride.

Got home from two weeks in the Highlands and I remembered the alarm had been playing up before I left. Lock the car with the c/l remote and then after about 1>2 minutes I get the continual horn and alarm siren plus all but the drivers door unlocks. The bonnet switch looks a little old and the gaiter that covers it has split so I’m guessing it’s the culprit but thought I’d ask on here too.
On the upside, I got an autovox V5 twin camera and mirror for Xmas so that will mean I can see out the back when reversing and have dash cams front and rear. My nephew also kindly bought me a spare wheel cover which should help stop aging. Today’s job in detecting the squeal noise when driving was to drop the transfer box oil and see if there was anything untoward (metal and fluid quantity etc..). all seems ok there but I have refilled it with Swepco 201 oil this time after watching a couple of videos online. It’s very thick and possible made some difference to noise levels.
The front prop has a little play in the UJ and possibly a little wet around a couple of the seals but I didn’t spot anything there which would cause noise/vibration. It’s definitely something when the car has warmed a little and above 20mph. The noise/squeal increases specifically relative to engine speed. It doesn’t happen when in neutral when the engine is revved so this leads me to something in the transmission - gearbox/clutch. It looks like I have a leaking rear main seal from oil in the bottom of the bell housing, no clutch slip yet. I may have to bite the bullet and get it booked in to the garage for further diagnosis. Maybe a greasing up of the prop might help, or remove it and see if the noise goes away? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yes, good shout. At worst it’ll eliminate that as a cause and it’s free to do… although a new one is about £120 so not horrendous. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

Someone suggested the handbrake as a possible cause of the noise so I checked the adjustment on that and it was fine. I did manage to catch the sound on this video. Just need to upload the video somewhere [/img] 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

I managed to upload a video here: https://youtube.com/shorts/s51tY-nxkbU?si=GbeI6_j05UxvKNVL
You can just hear it above the engine noise but YouTube has put a little dampening on the sound. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled. 2002 Range Rover G4 Event car (Australian leg) 2008 Discovery 3 G4 UK Selections car 1968 Series 2a |

Today has been a mixed bag of fortune. Good news is I think I’ve found the source of the noise, a fellow G4OC member pointed me to the exhaust manifold. After removing the heat shield, there was lots of soot towards the rear of the block and the last upper stud was missing its nut.
The nut was sat on top of the web between the last two branches and when i screwed it on, well thats when I realised the stud was snapped. Not awful but definitely a trip the garage is required. Whilst the heat shield was off, I noticed that a down pipe stud was missing too, so that was an easy fix. After nipping up the bottom nut on the manifold which was loose, I took it for a spin and the noise is greatly reduced. So I’m pleased I know what the issue is, even if it’s not something I can fix and I can drive it without worrying too much. Before the Defender goes back for its MOT next week, I thought I best sort the last of the advisories which was a slightly worn drivers side track rod end.
The old one is as tight as a tight thing so I plumped for a set of Terrafirma TF250 bars from Crafted Ovals/Solihull Parts. Superb next day delivery from them as always, just wish I’d ordered good weather from them too.
