My mistake. Misunderstood the complicated narative on the DirectGov website Just been back and read it again and you're absolutely right.
I'm pretty confident on this one though. See the extract from the C&U Regs below:
I've editied out a lot of irrelevant stuff, but this definitely says the maximum trailer width for vehicles with a gross weight up to 3500kg is 2.3m. I'm sure that changed very recently. This is the trouble I am having with the investigation into small trailers and O licensing, as a lot of the official data is out of date and/or contradictory. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

Damn. Shot down again A bit more searching shows it was consulted on and changed last year to 2.55m across the board. Looks like it was an EU harmonisation thing Darren

Hi Darren, your source is the 1986 C & U regulations
My source is NTTA and I quote
so difference is 50mm! Which is correct? Have the 86 regulations been amended? Is there a typo on the NTTA site? I would normally argue that the latest edition of official regulations are the ones to go by. Is there an error in measurements allowable? +/-? I do not know Someone at DVLA have recently sent an email to a friend saying that it is legal for a pre 97 driver to supervise a post 97 driver towing a two horse horse box which is against the 2010 regulations. Ho humm as I said some of the motoring laws are as clear as mud! Brendan |

No, it looks like the 1986 regs have been amended with The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) Regulations 2011. The full text of the amendment can be read HERE and the 2.55m width is now the correct figure.
You're right though. It's less than straightforward. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

But the really stupid thing is you can measure the trailer all day long, but it is fully legal as long as you put an abnormal indivisible load movement order into the police to move large caravans, sheds, boxes ect ect we used to tow all sorts of wierd things into oxford where we could not get big hiab trucks into, (might have been a bit over weight ) 24'x 12' portacabins used to weigh 3ton and thats without the trailer, and the toilet blocks were smaller but even heavier.
The same with the trailers that carry Oxford and Cambridge boat race type boats the trailer is only x long but the boats hang off the back with a trailer board on them. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
