Thats what I was taught when I did my B&E earlier this year.

My mistake. Misunderstood the complicated narative on the DirectGov website Rolling Eyes Just been back and read it again and you're absolutely right.

7) What is maximum width of a trailer behind car/4x4?

2.55m

I'm pretty confident on this one though. See the extract from the C&U Regs below:

Quote:
Width
8.—(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), the overall width of a vehicle of a class specified in an item in column 2 of the Table shall not exceed the maximum width specified in column 3 in that item.

TABLE
(regulation 8(1))

1......2.....................................................................................3
Item Class of vehicle...............................................................Maximum width (metres)

4.......A trailer drawn by a motor vehicle having a maximum
.........gross weight exceeding 3500 kg...................................2.5
5.......An agricultural trailer......................................................2.5
6.......An agricultural trailed appliance.....................................2.5
7.......Any other trailer drawn by a vehicle...............................2.3

I've editied out a lot of irrelevant stuff, but this definitely says the maximum trailer width for vehicles with a gross weight up to 3500kg is 2.3m. The full text of the original can be found HERE Darren

I'm sure that changed very recently. This is the trouble I am having with the investigation into small trailers and O licensing, as a lot of the official data is out of date and/or contradictory. 2011 110 USW

Max trailer width has increased recently. Its on DVLA site when looking at licence categories and tractors in particular. Sorry too late in evening to go searching for the link

Hi Darren, your source is the 1986 C & U regulations

My source is NTTA and I quote

Quote:

Maximum Trailer Dimensions

Towing vehicle up to 3500kg GVW
Length (excluding the coupling and drawbar): 7.0m
Width Maximum: 2.55m (was 2.3m up to 2010)
Towing vehicle over 3500kg GVW
Length (excluding the coupling and drawbar): 12m (min 4 wheels
Width Maximum: 2.55m
Length of towing vehicle and trailer combined: 18m
Maximum overhang of load from rear of trailer: 3.05m

so difference is 50mm! Which is correct? Have the 86 regulations been amended? Is there a typo on the NTTA site?
I would normally argue that the latest edition of official regulations are the ones to go by. Is there an error in measurements allowable? +/-? I do not know

Someone at DVLA have recently sent an email to a friend saying that it is legal for a pre 97 driver to supervise a post 97 driver towing a two horse horse box which is against the 2010 regulations.

Ho humm as I said some of the motoring laws are as clear as mud!

No, it looks like the 1986 regs have been amended with The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) Regulations 2011. The full text of the amendment can be read HERE and the 2.55m width is now the correct figure.

You're right though. It's less than straightforward. Darren

But the really stupid thing is you can measure the trailer all day long, but it is fully legal as long as you put an abnormal indivisible load movement order into the police to move large caravans, sheds, boxes ect ect we used to tow all sorts of wierd things into oxford where we could not get big hiab trucks into, (might have been a bit over weight Embarassed Embarassed ) 24'x 12' portacabins used to weigh 3ton and thats without the trailer, and the toilet blocks were smaller but even heavier.
The same with the trailers that carry Oxford and Cambridge boat race type boats the trailer is only x long but the boats hang off the back with a trailer board on them. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
