found 2 snapped heads and swarf when doing a rear diff oil change, stripped axle down, can see the snapped bolts on crownwheel and associated damage

That is bizarre to see a failure in that form. I would suggest as above that they were over torqued during assembly and that the root cause of the damage was actually done back then. Would be worth checking what the others are torqued to to confirm this.

I seem to remember that someone else on here reported a similar failure but at the front not long ago.
It's hard to know the cause without seem the fracture face of the two broken bolts (the loose bits are too mangled, but the threaded bits should be clear), but it is an unexpected failure. Last edited by blackwolf on 28th Mar 2022 11:44am. Edited 1 time in total |

we see this failure very often on the 110 rear which it why we upped the bolt thread on our HD hypoid diff, Dave

A had simillar problem on fron diff of 110. And have seen it quite a lot of passenger cars with strong diesel engine. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo
