Hi there,
I am posting on behalf of a work colleague whom just had a catastrophic engine failure on her 90 2.4 TDCI (she had over 150k on the clock). Her local indy told by her that the engine seized and she needs a new engine. Something to do with the timing chain of the engine she was told. The engine sounds like a bag of spanner and the engine definitely seems toast. She looked at various alternatives - including a new unit from Turner engineering or from M&D but the bill is looking like it could be coming up to 7-8k all in (4.5k for the engine, 1.5k for the fitting and prob £1k of “while you’re in there”) Unfortunately it’s not something she can afford at this time. We had a look online together and found a company out of Manchester advertising on eBay for reconditioned engines for £2k all in and fitted: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Defe...635-2958-0 Does anyone know about them / have ever used them? What are other possible alternatives that are “affordable”. This car is not a garage queen and is being used as it should (off roading, road trip across Europe etc…) Thanks |

Can’t help you on your specific query, just be certain that it’s actually catastrophic before you go ahead with anything… See here https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic80807.html > 110 XS Double Cab

I believe she can start it yes but doesn’t want to drive it for obvious reasons.
Will ask her to get a second opinion - unsure how she gets the car to the next specialist Any thoughts on reconditioned engines btw? I check that auto part ltd company in Manchester, they seem to get good feedback on Google reviews… |

Cheap recon engines are built to a price, not a standard
I certainly wouldn't entertain fitting one... If she can't afford it, either: Park it up until she can Sell as spares/repair Bang the replacement on a credit card and sell as a runner, then pay the card off |

As above - just stick a used engine in with some kind of warranty/proof that it runs. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.
