Does a MY2022 need a module to use the Activity Key?
Hi. I wanted to order an Activity Key for my MY22 D300 HSE as an accessory, not factory fitted. My dealer is telling me it will be nearly £1000 as I need a module for the car as well as the new style key.

I was under the impression that the activity key was compatible with MY21 onwards without needing a new KVM as it already has Keyless Entry.

Has anyone successfully added an activity key to a MY22 as a dealer accessory (not from the factory)? Defender D300 HSE 110 MY22 Pangea Green

Yeah, pretty sure it was only the MY20 that was more hassle retrofitting. MY22 should be fine. https://instagram.com/bentheoandrews

That’s what I thought. I’ll get them to ask Landrover Technical otherwise I’ll go to another dealer! Defender D300 HSE 110 MY22 Pangea Green

I’ve seen those, they are very good. I think my best option is to take my iPad in to the dealer and make him watch them. To be honest I’ve been through this with Landrover before. The dealer does not seem to keep up with the technology. Unfortunately if you email Landrover direct they just refer you to the dealer! Some time in the past I had a similar issue and got the actual information from Landrover and took it to the dealer to prove my point. Fantastic customer service as ever. Have you thought about reaching out to LR-Retrofits or Venture Automotive to see if an activity key can be added easily?

I really shouldn’t need to do that. It’s advertised in the accessory brochure for the MY21+ and makes no mention of the need for an extra module. I’m pretty sure the dealer is wrong. If not then it’s a trading standards issue for false advertising! Defender D300 HSE 110 MY22 Pangea Green

Thanks. I’ve been through the PowerfulUK videos again. Unfortunately they are all about a MY20 vehicle. There is a lot of info about the USA cars needing a new KVM if they don’t have keyless entry but that is a red herring. UK MY20 were delivered with a KVM that could only hold 2 keys (for security). I read somewhere that from MY21 onwards the KVM was set up for 3 keys so you could just add the new activity key as a third key.

Unfortunately I cannot find where I read this or find anyone who has successfully added a new activity key to a MY22 to advise if they needed a new KVM. Until I can get a definitive answer my dealer just keeps telling me I need a new KVM as well as the key regardless of the model year.

I’ve emailed Landrover but I suspect, as usual, they will just refer me to the dealer. Defender D300 HSE 110 MY22 Pangea Green

On the Velar, the activity key works by holding the 'watch' band to a specific place on the boot where the module is. It's a completely separate system to the keyless entry one -indeed, it disables keyless entry entirely as it is envisaged that you will leave your keys in the car. Given the bands appear identical for the Defender and the Velar I'm pretty doubtful that system / setup has changed - in which case, I can well see how the only way to get the activity key retrofitted will be to buy the activity key module, fit it / get it fitted in the car, and reprogram the car using LR software to enable it. Which means LR can charge a fortune (for a pretty simple job) - the module itself is under £200 from memory (they are on eBay!).

Accept it's possible things have changed on the defender, but this would be my best guess. And if I'm wrong, it at least explains the approach the dealer is taking as that's how it works on all the other models!

Much much cheaper to order activity key at the outset. I've learned the hard way. If only they would now actually build my order...

Yes, that’s the old key. It was a proximity device. The new one is actually a 3rd key. I’m getting there. On Landrover’s website I’ve found what I think I need as it talks about model years for the new key. MY20 needs 2 items (key and KVM), MY21+ just needs the key. MY20 came out the factory with a KVM that can only hold 2 keys but from 21 onwards the KVM can hold 3 keys. I’m just going to have to go to a different dealer.

They even quote prices. £246 for MY21 onwards including dealer fitting and £450 for MY20 including dealer fitting. That’s half what I’ve been quoted. The accessories brochure has a lower price for the key than the factory price list. I’ve had this before with tow bars on previous models but can’t work out why they do that apart from the fact that a factory accessory will have a 3 year guarantee over the one year for a dealer fit. Defender D300 HSE 110 MY22 Pangea Green

Interesting. Keep us posted. If true I'll cancel the activity key from my order and save some ££!

Ok, still not getting anywhere. I've been on the Disco5 forum and the answers there are similar to here. Some dealers saying you need a new KVM, some saying it depends on what KVM it came with etc. Landrover Tech got back to me and said that although the KVM can take 3 keys (MY21 onwards) it is locked down at the factory so you can't add keys (what happens if you break a key and need a new one?)

I found one person in the same situation as myself. After trying a couple of dealers he got one prepared to do the research and it would appear that you can add a key. His car came from the factory with no pre-order for an activity key but the dealer successfully added the activity key to the existing KVM (as per Landrovers own advertising in the accessory brochure).

What I would really like is to find more examples of this so I can be completely sure when I go back to my dealer. Defender D300 HSE 110 MY22 Pangea Green

The interesting thing being JLR were coming up with a "repair" process for keys to be added by dealers.
