Options to replace a TD5 turbo?
I noticed on our recent jaunt to Wales that my turbo is really very noisy on my 156k mile old TD5....

This leads me to believe that it is not very happy, and I would rather have thought about, and possibly acted upon this before it becomes an immediate issue.

So, having never replaced a turbo I wondered what options were out there...

Replace with new or recon unit?

replace with secondhand unit?

uprate turbo with something a bit more fun - maybe something with a variable geometry?

Anyone have any direct experience?

Are Disco TD5 turbos the same as defender ones?

Cheers

Disco ones are the same as defender (although i'm not sure if the boost pressure is exactly the same, as the disco is 136bhp and the defender 122, so your ECU may freak out if you just bolt it straight on.... check the pressure first or get one of the ECU boost boxes)

a good second hand one should work, but you should try and check the milage first... it moght have 200,000 on it!

I've got an IRB VGT turbo on my 110 (Td5), with a 190bhp ECU file, it flies, and pulls very well from low revs.Even before i got it flashed up to 190, i was running a 140bhp tune with the VGT, and it still pulled away much better than standard... more like a "modern" car does, seemless power as opposed to on/off when you reach the on boost point.

Gary at Alive is just about to start selling a VNT turbo with all the right pipes to fit and everything, from what i gather its a "made to measure" thing rather than a "make the turbo fit the engine" thing.

The IRB/Bell ones just bolts in place too. I've got one of the early ones, and had to change the oil feed pipe, but that's all.

Later ones drop straight in.

Where the standard sized turbo (standard, hybrid, or the TT vgt) fall short, our new conversion really excells! Mr. Green

It's been almost 2 years in development to get to where we are now. Testing has been taking place on a very heavy working Defender, A Defender 90 hill rally car, and on our own Discovery Td5 mule. To date, all is going to plan perfectly, without a single failure so far.

Come and see us at Peterborough. It should hopefully be ready for then, and fitted to our Black Td5 90.
