Engine cutting out on motorway
Hi all,

I am having trouble whilst on the motorway I would drive for 5 to 10 mins fine (sometimes longer) then the engine cuts out and goes into a 'limp mode' where I have no acceleration BUT still driveable at 50

I pull over turn the engine off wait a while and then can go again. But the same thing will happen.

Any advice would be great.

Check that it is really not overheating... if that is ok, check the cylinder head temperature sensor.
I would connect to obd and check temperature through that.
The puma will reduce power to protect itself if it reads high cht. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

What does your temperature gauge read?

I had something similar.

Initially cleaned MAF and MAP, but it didn;t completely clear the problem.

Then VCV

Which again changed the issues a bit but not completely.

After a LOT of head scratching I again changed the VCV, when I took the one out it was different!

All here https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic80592.html

I think it was the VCV, but I still have an underlying issue in that it occasionally stalls a few seconds after starting (which I think is a separate issue with the Throttle Position Sensor).

Good luck!!! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)
