Hi Pete,
Regarding replacement, park it facing a wall or the garage door, a good few metres back. Note where the beam strikes or mark the positions, for dipped and high beam. Fit the new headlight and adjust it to the same spot(s). So long as the original was adjusted properly the new one should be ok. The cheapest option without upgrade will be replacing just the one broken lamp. Where to buy? Support your local independent LR specialist. They're having a tough time just now, no new Defenders coming along and the farmers have moved to Ford Rangers or similar. Get to know them, then when you need parts or advice they will hopefully recognise you as a repeat customer. I'm looking for a new independent specialist, the one I've used for the past 10 years has recently ceased trading. |

They're just standard Wipac quadoptic H4 Lamps.
You can get them from just about any classic car specialist, they fit all sorts. The Defender can use the ones from the Mini's etc with the side light built in, as you can just leave it unoccupied. https://www.lrisolutions.co.uk/pair-headli...0-110.html LRI have some here with stainless bezels - the stainless bezels are a worthwhile upgrade, as the standard ones rot out. |

Forget about replacing with a standard unit, fit a pair of Wipac Crystal units with Phillips X-treme bulbs - you will be absolutely amazed at the difference they make to driving at night! Headlamps about £35-40, bulbs another £15-20 well worth the investment

You will almost certainly need new adjustment screws and bezel fixings. The s/s bezels and fixings can be obtained from site sponsor "Leeds".
The non stainless headlamp fixing kit is part number STC1614. This includes the two adjusting screws. |

As above, and get the original fixings out and replace with SS ASAP before they just up.

When I put new headlamps in my mums Citroen, I just took it to Kwikfit and asked them, I think they charged a tenner or something. |

First of all, apologies for the tardiness of my appreciation for all your helpful comments.
I managed to get the job done as advised by your good selves. Alas, I then involuntarily went out of commission for a while, and my LR was involved in a deer collision. So, I’m back on the case, and now would like to tap the wealth of experience & knowledge you guys have. I was given a set of cheapo LED headlights that incorporate DRLs, so I have the standard 3-pin connection, plus another single wire with a female spade connector for wiring the dRLs. The Headlights work well (using the advice you all gave me to ensure the lights point in the right direction), but what do I do with the DRL wire ? Ideally, I’d like them on all the time, until I turn on the sidelights/headlights. I’ve had a look on the various forum sites, but none seem to exactly match my needs. I’m hoping the solution is within my currently limited ability, but if necessary will go to Halfords/whatever. Thank you |

Buy a DRL controller off ebay & follow the instructions is probably thte quickest & easiest

If you need to buy a DRL controller off the likes of eBay to get a set of LED headlights to work correctly then the chances are extremely high that the headlights are illegal.

Light function code of LED headlights with DRL incorporated will have HCR and RL marked on lens

Thanks leeds - didn't know that about the HCR/RL stuff.
I checked & you're quite right - nowhere to be seen on the pair I have, but as I said, they're cheapos. That said, the main/dip functions work OK. Its just how/where to connect up the DRL wire. |

Without the correct approval markings they are not road legal. Try telling your insurance company that you have done an illegal modification to your vehicle.

And you've expanded my knowledge as well ! Clearly I'm going to have to replace the cheapo LED headlights with proper normal ones, perhaps with an improved normal bulb. I'm very much obliged to you and all the other contributors. |
