Loose wing mirror
My passenger side wing mirror is loose where it attaches to the hinge.
As far as I can tell, I need to remove the front part of the hinge to tighten up from behind. As those bolts aren't captive, it's going to be a faff and will need the door to be realigned.

Is there a clever way to go about this?

Not difficult. Firstly make some alignment marks on the hinge and door (pencil or marker pen), then open the window, open the door, and support the open end of the door on blocks or similar. Remove the two bolts holding the top hinge to the door, using a slim open-ended spanner on the inside to avoid the need to remove the door card.

Once unbolted, you can tighten the mirror then reassemble. Use the alignment marks made at the start to get the hinge in the right place, and check and if necessary adjust by closing the door afterwards. Finally clean off your alignment marks.

It's a very simple job unless you have fitted security devices to the hinges, in which case it isn't at all simple.

Needless to say, I have security plates on the inside of the hinges. Thanks for the tip on marking. I'll give it a try next weekend.

Your security plates won't make any difference for this job. The jury's out on whether they do anything useful security-wise, sadly probably not, except perhaps provide a certain peace of mind.

You should get some MRC1979 plastic washers as the reason why screws are loose may be that they are missing. 1995 Defender 110 CSW
