Pic 1 as long as you have two metal cups on axle ( but if you have no metal cups on axle lower bush are wrong type )

Just a note on the top washers (chassis bracket end), the convex side of the washers should facing the bush. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I have the cup setup on my axle as per the picture above and about to replace the lower bushes for first time so have a couple of questions I expect it’s easy to answer.
1.What’s the torque figure for that lower nut ( I’ve seen conflicting values) 2. is torque easy to apply with a standard socket or does the piston rod need to be held in place via the square section on the end to stop it rotating. NB:if piston rod needs to be held in place I can resolve this by fitting a crows foot spanner at 90 degrees on my 1/2 norbar torque wrench, thereby maintaining correct torque application, but handy to know in advance so I can ensure I have the correct size crows foot with I/2 inch drive socket. I know I can do it by feel but given I have great torque wrenches I like to use them whenever I can. Thx Ian |

with the early type rear shock and axle with out metal cups on axle you need the extra wash that locate the bush in to the axle
Early type lower rear shock bush Used in Chassis VINs from VA998900 to WA159806 (1997 to 1998 MY) and your reg at the cross over point have seen early type axle used on later rages red line show where axle mounting go in early bash and easher set up Last edited by dorsetsmith on 7th Nov 2021 12:58pm. Part number for the shocks are different between early and later axle (as DS stated, for without and with cups spot welded to the axle respectively).
I believe the shocks for the early axles have a shorter stud. They also come with the extra washers that sandwich the axle bracket. IIRC the bushes are also different. Pictures in 1st post show shocks for axles with cups. Edit. DS is spot on 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Cheers. I think its all starting to make sense now. Having a 99' Defender will give me the later axle.

Thanks all
Job all done. Less than an hour for both side. I had the axle type with the cups built in. The car now has a less of a jelly like rear end. Lets see how she performs in the rough stuff next week on the Rally Nuts event in Hafren forest. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
