Dead Defender TD5
So, my 2005 Defender TD5 died on me yesterday.

l was driving along and
The engine just stopped. The temperature gauge dropped to zero and the engine cut out, there was no EML light.

After that it would crank but obviously wouldn't start.

Turn on the ignition and
I've got

No EML light
No glow plug light
No temp gauge (other gauges still work)
No fuel pump whine

The Defender was recovered to my home and the RAC guy spent an hour on it but couldn't sort it.
I've checked the yellow relays, the various earths, fuses, ECU connectors, inertia switch connectors etc
and made no progress at all.

The immobiliser light still seems to flash and the alarm works. It's being recovered to a Land Rover specialist tomorrow hopefully.

l've looked at the various wiring harnesses and all seem okay. There was no warning, no misfire, it just died.

Could it be the engine ECU under the seat that's failed?

Check main power wiring and grounding. Worth looking at, even if not the culprit. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

That's one thing l didn't check, although l have checked the earth, l even ran a wire directly to the battery.

I will go outside and have a look, l am sure the RAC guy would have checked it but you never know.

He may not “know” defenders. There aren’t many vehicles where you nee to take a seat apart to find a fuse board, Thumbs Up

He's definitely been in the seat box because he's cleaned the connectors to the ECU.

I checked for power to the under seat fuses and it's okay. l
also checked the earth again, in fact l connected a jump lead between the seat box/ECU and battery negative....no change.

Power ECM i.e. Question as most of the this that not working receive and switch ground from the ECM
No EML light controlled ecm
No glow plug light this relay controlled by the ecm
No temp gauge driven by ecm (all other gauges still work )
No fuel pump whine this relay controlled by the ecm

But start motor control relay receive and switch ground from the alarm unit and + from ign switch

C0658 plug ref black plug ecu

pin 33 ignition input to the ecm check fuse 12 10 amp passenger fuse box all so make shore you have 12v both side the fuse and to pin 33 (see below )

pin 1-2-24-25 ground for ecm check all

pin 22 + battery supply ecm switch by main relay and feed from inertia switch make shore you have 12v both side the switch and down to one side of the main relay

for the ecm start up to take place the ignition switch must be in position `ii ` and no less that 6v must be supplied to pin 33 black plug on the ecm at this point main relay engages and provides battery supply ecu and other components if main relay fails or loses supply engine will crank but not start or if running stop running

Given that the engine cranks, I wouldn’t be worrying about the earths too much, it wouldn’t crank properly if the earth was a problem. As lord haggis says, inertia switch would be where I’d start as that cuts the power to the main relay

If the engine just stopped, but cranks, but there is no fuel pump, glow plugs, gauges or EML then the likelihood is that it is one of three things, power to the ECU, Earth from the ECU or a dead ECU. Any chance you have someone close by you could borrow an ECU off just to check?!

Thank you for the above information, this is all really useful advice.

The Defender is with the LR specialist now but l will pass this information on to them. l will report back on what they find.
