Thank you and all sorted!
So I thought I'd re-attempt over the weekend. Obviously knowing I wouldn't be able to get clips the next day, I took a rational approach. That was.... to smash each one with a rubber mallet and then push it out with a screwdriver. Less than 5 minutes and it was all sorted with seemingly no damage.
Then repeated the process again the following day with success when I decided to replace the grille again....
I did have a spare A/C grill on hand so obviously the above was a bit more easier to accept....
That said... probably best to cut / push through and replace
