Rattle noise when main gear in neutral
Hi

My 2011 Defender 110 seems to have a rattle noise when the main gear is in neutral. I've had the issue for like two years and I'm not too sure what the issue could be.

Some notes:
* The rattle noise only occurs sometimes (maybe 1-2 times per trip).
* It only occurs when the main gear is in neutral and the clutch isn't depressed
* The sound stops when either the clutch is depressed (as shown in the video) or if the main gear is not in neutral
* Seems to occur more frequently when the car is parked in a hill as opposed to flat ground (like shown in video)

Skip to 12 seconds in to hear the noise:

Any ideas as to what the issue can be would be highly appreciated,

Thanks!

check out the clutch threads on here that sounds like a rattle from the clutch or the transmission caused by the clutch

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

That is most likely to be your Defender telling you it needs a new driven plate, a very well known issue with the TDCi especially with the earlier clutches. There are many threads on here on the subject.

Incidentally you are confusing "in" and "out" when talking about the clutch - "in" means engaged (pedal up), and "out" means disengaged (pedal pressed). It is amazing how many people make this mistake. Very Happy

As above. Worn or loose/broken spring on clutch driven plate. I have a similar video of mine when it was rattling but struggling to post it
