Problems started with poor starting,so had a small amount of oil at the red ecu plug,this was cleaned and the injection harness replaced,still no joy. Next injectors o rings and copper washers replaced, still no joy. Next glow plugs replaced,still no joy. Next once it's running I found that the relays under the drivers seat they click and there's a misfire and a puff of smoke from the exhaust and the engine warning light comes on but only for a second. Once the engine is hot the problem goes away. Next replaced the glow plug relay and I have added an extra earth cable from the battery to the earth point under the drivers seat. Any ideas what to try next lol

Am thinking the crankshaft is ok as once the engine is warm enough it runs ok, it's only once the weather got cold that the problem started. I was thinking it's a glow plug problem but new glow plugs and relay and it still miss fires every 30 seconds but only for a brief moment and that's when I can feel the relays click. So am at a loss what's causing the problem.

I don't think it is glowplug related as a td5 will start without glowplugs normally.

All oils and filters changed 3000 miles ago also a new maf sensor at the same time. Just been looking at the truck this afternoon, it starts ok but about every 30 seconds while it's cold and just ticking over it miss fires as it does this I can hear the relays under the seat click and the temp gauge jumps to the right only for a split second then the engine warning light comes but only for a second before going out. I have wiggled everything I can think of to see if it's a loose connection but no joy. Once the engine is warm it drives ok grrrrrr lol very frustrating.

Temp sensor connection?

As this problem only happens when the engine is cold I thought " glow plugs " I have disconnected the glow plug relay and the miss fire still happens. I have ordered a crank position sensor so I will try that next week lol.

Sounds like a dodgy main ECU relay to me. Might be worth trying a different one for good measure to see what happens 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

An update, changed the crank position sensor today and it's made no improvement so I still have miss fire but only when the engine is cold. I unplugged the inertia switch on the bulkhead and the engine cut out straight away, once reconnected the engine fired up ok so I would assume that it's not that causing the problem. Every electrical connection I have looked at is clean and appears to be good, ??????????

Not tried that yet. The thing is this miss fire only happens when the engine is cold grrrrr. Am thinking now to get someone to plug in a diagnostic computer to see what fault codes are there as I am at a loss to what's causing the problem

quick update, had a computer pluged in and theres no fault codes at all ????? so its now going to have to go to a landrover garage to let them fix it

Do you still have your EGR ? If yes, it could be sticky. If it's in the wrong position (open), you'll have problems only on a cold engine |

Try this one, it's a quick and easy check on the relais. They may look good, but can fail after a few decades. Also make sure they fit well in the base sockets. Renewing the underseat relais' fixed my occasional misfire and temperature gauge to red issue. |

Is it not a continous mis fire when cold, more like it just 'Miss's' every now and again when cold?
