2.4 Puma has a fuel cooler, the 2.2 Puma, does not.
It does, however, have a fuel system related pipe there where the fuel cooler should be. This is why it's still recommended to have a fuel cooler guard as it protects this wee pipe from the dangers of the world. |

Sorry to hijack the thread but I have a stupid question.
Apart from the obvious, what does the fuel cooler do (why is it fitted) and is it detrimental on vehicles where they have omitted them? |

I had it explained to me that modern high pressure injection engines leak more fuel, back to the tank,from the injector returns. Because the pressure is increased by the fuel pump, the temperature is raised.
When Diesel is heated it's ability to lubricate is reduced which is very harmful to close tolerance components like the injection pump. Also heated Diesel reduces engine power. I think its something like a a rise of 10 ยฐC causes a power loss of 7.5%. Of course I think this was over simplified explanation and I presume there are many other effects. Interesting. The problem is that liquids are incompressible, so the fuel pump is not compressing the diesel, but is only increasing the pressure. Very different thermodynamics vs fluid dynamics.

Hi all,
Thank you for all your responses. So mine also has "The metal pipe" I do a lot of hot climate travel in my defender. I wonder if it is a "Fuel cooler" or if it serves another purpose also. Given that I use mine mostly in hot climates should I retro fit this "cooler"? Thank you all in advance for your help. Perhaps what RustyM says consolidates more the possibility that the 'cooler' is actually a 'warmer'. If the defender was destined for a warm climate, then possibly they skip the cooler as it is not needed!!

I was wrong. Maybe Iโve been reading the repair manuals too long - Iโd have wagered money I had one!

You can drain from the thermostat hose, maybe not quite the very lowest point but very close. No Guts, No Glory.
