New TD5 owner & service cost
Hi all,

Very new into the Land Rover owning club, having spent the last 10-15 years being driven around in all different ones as a kid, with my father owning quite a few in this time. I have come to acquire a 2000 TD5 defender which had a 'heritage' edition replication to it.

Having received it last year, it hasn't been enjoyed as much as I'd like to have done due to Covid & lockdowns etc! I have done some basic maintenance but it has more or less been a sitting duck, apart from the odd drive out every couple of weeks to get it running and warmed up. I have dropped it off to a local Land Rover specialist for a service, but as I'm new to the game, I've no idea how much the service should cost. Maybe it's something I could have done myself once I had got the genuine parts etc, but thought it'd be be a good idea to have them do it so any kinks could be picked up in the mean time, touch wood they don't! As it drives great and had a good rehaul last year when the transmission etc was fully changed (prior to my ownership).

The service price was quoted as ~£250 (excl VAT) which seems pretty reasonable from what I've searched through, and the garage seems to get a lot of praise for their work. Is this the case?

Hopefully it flies through it's MOT with no issues, but the last MOT picked up some wear on the front & rear brake discs. I have replaced the front ones myself in summer last year, but didn't get round to the rears since I had so much fun with removing the front caliper bolts.... nightmare, but they should be all good now!

I'll look forward to having a nose around these forums for some advice, hints & tips and will hopefully get a chance to seeing some more on the road shortly!

Hi and welcome.
£250 sounds about right to me.
I alternate, I do the service myself one year and send it to an independent the next, just to check things over.
As for anything else ,if it’s winter and I can’t put it off I’ll send it to the garage, or if I don’t fancy it.
Anything else brakes etc I do my self.

At the moment they’re all going up in value so they’re worth looking after. 2002 td5 90 county hardtop

When people talk about a full service what does that include?

I would think a full service (according to me) would cost more. But I do new oil in trans box, G box, both diffs, top up swivels, fuel, air, 2x oil filters, and grease all nipples. Possibly brake fluid check/swap, every 2-3 years an injector loom. Then all the checks, and adjustments.

As it turns out, the garage had rang back earlier and it's gonna cost a heck more than that to pass it's MOT in any case! I've no idea why some of the list of things weren't picked up on the last MOT, as the vehicle hasn't done many miles since.

Landy Andy, exactly what you've just said was included in the full service on mine, its an independent garage I've used for a long time and they're really great guys who do a lot of work on all sorts of landys and range rovers.

What has it failed on? They’re probably just seeing a new Land Rover owner and seeing a chance to make a quick profit.

Service is generally easy to do with simple tools.

There was rather a long list of things that was brought up, but have asked for a full breakdown of it so I can check it, but ultimately to get it through its MOT it's probably going to be north of £1500. Namely for brake calipers all round, but then on closer inspection he called again to say that the rear half chassis is not in great condition and has been previously botched welded and then just blasted with underseal to mask it.

I have trust in the garage, but that it just going off reviews and recommendations I have seen online, I just can't see how it left the previous garage/dealer in this state and passed its previous MOT, as like I say the vehicle has hardly been driven since.

Not sure what to believe at the minute! But doesn't really seem I have much choice, as the type of work they're saying is required is not something I could delve into myself, on most parts anyway.

Get the fail list and the Def home. Then go through the list, discussing on here if required, and then work what the issues are and what you can do about it, or what you need to get done to it, also with some idea of costs.

So I've had an update this afternoon to say that it's now passed it's MOT after all the work has been done, will be looking to pick up Friday/Saturday, after parting with a smidge under 3k Shocked Big Cry

They have however mentioned that the rear chassis looks corroded in some areas, and have since applied some welding, but doesn't fill me with confidence that it's going to last! I'm usually pretty handy, but replacing something like the rear half chassis is way out of my league. From what I can see, a new one would probably be approx £700, but the labour to fit something like that I would imagine would be quite extensive.

Had my 2005 TD5 for 3 months, broken down twice, cost £865 so far and that's without a service or MOT so you're not doing too bad. That's the trouble with old vehicles. I still love it though!

Time to take it else where, my local garage who my dad used, cost me a nearly £1000, for a timing belt and to do a few odds and sods to pass its mot. They milked the MOT job did they not! anyway that was the very last time my cars went over there. My dad barked about going there still, until they failed his and wanted £1200 to pass it! The funny thing was they failed his on the smoke test. But the car was not in long enough for them to even MOT the car. We took it to the garage that did mine, and it flew through. They could not see why the other garage had failed it on the smoke test, Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
