My 2.4 recently died a death so I am considering options. It’s between the 3.2TDCi and M57 I think > 110 XS Double Cab

There's a lot of work involved with the 3.2 swap considering is a sister engine to the puma. Om606 is my next project for my 90 pick up.

Transit to ranger sump swap. Little bit machining and fabricating to save swapping the oil pump.

Apart from projects always being a bit of fun regardless of the outcome, do you think the level of work you’ve put in makes the 3.2 a viable swap? I would love to do a swap eventually (problematic in France) and would think M57 for the cylinders, auto option and oomph. I’ve always wondered if the lack of extra horses from the 3.2 over a fully remapped 2.4 is really worth it? Am I right in thinking it’s just 200bhp out of the box? Unless you go down the route of bigger turbos etc. Monsieur Le Grenadier

As far as viable goes comparing to the 2.4 if you push the 2.4 up to 200hp how much does it cost? With how much work to get it there. Then you have reliability at 200hp and then drive ability. I have a std engine giving smooth 200hp which is enough for me and can be used as a every day motor. Also get to keep the original look with a twist . There's is no fabricating to the chassis the engine sits on original mounts, The puma gear box bolts straight to the 3.2 only needing to swap the clutch and flywheel from the 2.4 as there's 6mm diameter difference in the bell housing's. Gearbox internals are the same may be a ratio difference but all the bearings are exactly the same.
The only factor is getting and engine and everything you need to get it running. They are hard to come by never mind fitted to a defender. Which for me is another reason to do it. Cummins are an excellent engine but loads of people doing the conversion same with the BMW excellent engine by means of power and keeping up with engine tech but there's loads getting done. I thought why not. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

I’m with you Gorky. I don’t have the technical knowledge to do it, but if I did, this is the swap I’d do. I particularly like the OEMness of it all. Well done!
Is the 3.2 a much smoother engine than the 2.4. I actually like the torque and power of the 2.4, I just hate how rough it is, especially above 2500 rpm. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

I think all of these engines have a sort for injector chatter at 2500 then it clears up. I would say they are about the same a standard 2.4 for smoothness but a xant see a tuned up 2.4 being very smooth in village traffic.
The main part of the work is wiring but anyone wanting to do this I have everything in my little book of what I need and how I got it working and I willing to share any info required. |

Interesting you say this as this is the one part from this thread so far that was putting me off. Earlier in the thread you discussed stripping the gearboxes for the MT85 bellhousing swap. Is this not necessary? > 110 XS Double Cab |

I wanted to keep the bigger clutch and fly wheel which is why I stripped the box to keep the bigger bell housing. I wouldsay if you wanted more power from the 3.2 I would keep the bigger flywheel. Looking back I would have save the time in stripping the box and change the flywheel from the 2.4. So no this one required.

Ah sound ok. Does the gearbox and LT230 stay in the OE position to maintain props, original gear/hi-lo shifter linkages etc? > 110 XS Double Cab
