brakes and front wheel bearings

Hi landies, Now that horrible cold stuff has gone i need to do some work on my 2005 Td5 90. Firstly, are the brake pipe unions and bleed nipples metric or unf? Secondly, bearing in mind that my landy doesn't work to hard (bout 8 miles a day to take the dog out) is it feasable or theoretically correct to fit taper front wheel bearing kits instead of having to muck about with shims to fit the standard bearings? All replies gratefully received as ever. Thanks

I would certainly be swapping towards the old fashioned bearing setup. Far better.

Brake pipes are metric.

2002 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Keswick Green

Brake pipe unions for the calipers, master cylinder and rear axle t-piece (if no ABS) are all M10x1. Bleed nipples are the same

I've put several replacement bearings on mine and never had any issue just putting timken bearings on with the original spacers. Seen several people muse that the different spacers are more to take up tolerance in the stub axle than the bearing races!

The stub axle won't affect the spacer but the hub probably would.

Just rebuilt the swivel hubs and replaced bearing went to the old school double nut and much happier discs were ok to change replaced callipers as well factor in for new calliper bolts as they are bihex and easily rounded off especially if they have been on there a long time

Me too! Far quicker and never had an issue, though I do keep a couple spare sets in the truck just in case

When you fit everything new it is not a problem with the new style. I went for the old style as you can adjust them when the bearings get worn a little. Roel
