Loss of drive... Output shaft gone (i think)
Hi Guys,

looking for some help if possible please...

i have a 2014 2.2 puma which is on 60k miles.

When driving home from work today i noticed the gear box made a clucking noice a couple of seconds after changing chear every once in a while. Then literally when i pulled into my road i lost all drive. i could put it into gear but when i tried to pull away it just sounded like a load of nails spinning round pretty much and nothing happened. Luckily as i was on my road, with some help i managed to push it home...

After doing some research on the forum it appears it could be the output shaft, does this sound correct? If so does anyone know how much this will roughly cost to replace?

I will call a few Defender specilists on Monday but just wanted to prepare myself.

Not brilliant timing as we're moving in a couple of weeks but one of those things aha!

Sorry im a bit of a novice and not technical when i comes to cars!

Any help would be much a appreciated.

Presumably you have checked the transfer box is properly engaged?

yeah i check the transfer box, put it into high and low but nothing changed.

shouldnt cost too much, but upgrade to Ashcroft or LOF if you are keeping it DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Yes, definitely output shaft. Happened to us several years ago.
Was driving along, then heard a sort of click/clunk, then shortly after lost all drive.
Only issue you won't have is that it happened in Aussie in 35C+ heat, & it took around 4 hours with us sitting on the side of the road, very hot, waiting for a tilt tray!

Certainly sounds like an output shaft failure as this is what happened to mine but make sure the hi-lo lever hasn’t slipped into neutral 1st.

Well providing it isn't a drive flange (does it move in difflock?) then yes sounds like the output shaft.


Then if it is then LOF are the people to sort you out

Defiantly sounds to be the output shaft mate Big Cry

Id reccomend the Ashcroft upgraded shaft kit there awesome Thumbs Up

We aren't to far from you just down the a10 from the M25 enfield turn off - do have recovery aswell if you don't have RAC or AA

Although so far I've been lucky with mine, I do wonder, if misalignment is the reason for these failures, whether the LOF one piece shaft is likely to move the premature failure to a bearing instead.

Mine went at around 40k miles. Fixed under used car warranty but I think it was around 4 hours labour. The Ashcroft part is around £350, think OEM was about £150. Whoever does it make sure they have experience as an O ring seal on mine leaked afterwards. That was another 4 hours to fix. I think the problem was thought to occur due to it being a dry coupling, hence the Ashcroft solution?

Ask to keep the parts that come off - the transfer shaft makes a good doorstop and the coupling a tea light holder! On mine you could clearly see where the teeth had worn/shredded.
