300Tdi - seems to be leaking from the distribution head
is it possible to change the seal without taking the pump out? trying to figure out my options.

It leaks a lot if I crank the engine for any amount of time (like say when its coldin the morning) but does not seem to leak when running.
it is leaking directly below the distribution head on to the oil filter.

IIRC the oil pump is mounted on the crank at the front of the engine, so I see no reason why you couldn't take the oil filter housing off to change the gasket. Would be an idea to thoroughly degrease the area to check exactly where it's leaking first as there are quite a few oil connections in that area.

It is far easier to remove the injector pump to replace the distribution head o ring - only takes ten minutes if you have the pulley retaining tool in the timing kit.

There was a revised injector pump rear mounting bracket which is well worth fitting if you do remove the pump - it positions the pump correctly ans prevents the timing case flexing when the injector pump is reinstalled and bolts torqued up.
What I would say is don’t fit the revised bracket without changing the oring as the bracket will hold the pump in the exact correct position it should be in, if it has been slightly out of position for the last twenty years then the slight change in position will then cause the old o ring to leak!

In the uk the timing pulley kit is £20-£30 and the revised bracket is usually around £10.

Ah so we're taking fuel leak out of the injection pump rather than oil leak? My bad...oops.
