Hi all,
well good news the alternator issues seem to have been sorted (for now) However on doing my pre-start I found that the oil was up near the danger mark. This is a bit of a shock as I had expected it to have dropped rather than raised having been stood. Coolant is clear and no signs of snot on the dipstick or oil filler, coolant not over-pressurising so I'm fairly happy its not that. However it does seem to be a bit down on power, was running a bit hot on test drive. The oil doesn't smell of diesel but its definitely not at the level I had previously run it at. Part of me is tempted to drain out the excess and run it for a day see where it ends up though I have a horrible feeling that could do a lot of damage. First thought is the lift pump leaking into the block and then sump, secondly the injectors. Any tests or checks I can do before I start buying parts? One thing you can check for diesel dilution. Dip dipstick put a drop of oil on some blotting paper. if only oil there you will have a full consistent circle. if diesel dilution in oil you will have a halo round the oil circle.

Diesel dilution on Tdis is not common like it is on Td5s.
I would change the oil and then monitor the level over a few hundred miles, see if it moves again. |

Check the length of the dipstick tube. It is a common problem on Defender 200 Tdi, that because the fitting isn't secure, the tube can slide down dipping the dipstick deeper into the oil.
It should be 283mm from the top of the nut to the top of the tube. Any shorter and it'll be reading high. Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Right, some quick tests done!
Dipstick measured the dipstick and its measuring 295mm from top of nut to top of tube which i have a dim and distant memory of doing this previously as it was loose and misreading.  Click image to enlarge Needed all my extensions and a crows foot but got it tight
Oil drip test completed Click image to enlarge 1st drop from the dipstick as removed, then the second was it cleaned, re-inserted and then dripped. I think it is showing no halo so the plot thickens? Oil will float on water, now let's assume that the water and oil didn't mix.
Loosen the sump plug and let a little bit out. It'll be a little messy but it will be another thing to tick off the list. |

Oil and water in an engine get well mixed and form an oily white emulsion which will be seen under the rocker cover through the oil filler.

Sounds like it’s Engine oil and filter change time..
Ensuring you refill with 6.85 litres regardless of the dipstick. |

Hi guys,
Just to update on this, no loss of coolant and no obvious routes of water ingress. Will drain, refill then keep an eye on it. Not the best time for this to happen as my other truck is going in for its MOT on Saturday  Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197
