Technically as NEW vehicles go it is not a copy of the Defender that can be bought new from the dealers today.
It does have a passing resemblance to a vehicle that was last offered at a JLR dealership about four years ago ...... or one of these... Click image to enlarge |

I actually think there is more G Wagon influence in there than Defender. I can see bits of Jimmy in there as well.
It doesn't bother me, it looks good overall The only thing I think goes a bit far are the Alpline light grab handle thingies. It's not as though the first Land Rover wasn't heavily inspired by something else. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

The fact that it has some of the original Defender is a plus point to me. I would have preferred if Ineos had copied it directly but with far better build quality, ergonomics and safety features.. That would have been even better. Either way I like it and will order one. At least its assembled in the UK with major German and Japanese components. Sounds like a winner.

The story about the pub...? Apparently the idea was hatched in the pub. I credit that as more believable than the landrover being designed in the sand at red wharf bay, something nobody seems to have mentioned prior to 2008... 2011 110 USW

The chassis is sourced from Toyota and as Toyota has a factory in Portugal (Ovar) making Land Cruiser 70 series for Sub Saharan African & Morocco (only), you could assume that it will have a version of the LC chassis.....
Why couldn't LR have carried on making the Defender in Kenya or Turkey.. Just arrogance that they wanted only shiny SUV's for the school runs...IMO https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/...gal.146949 |

I don't see the problem that it resembles certain design aspects of the Defender (and the Jimny and the G Wagen). If it's a utility 4x4 then it will look similar to other 4x4's. It's no different to all Korean SUV's that look alike or to most European hatchbacks that look the same.
I've just bought SWMBO a strimmer for her birthday (and they say romance is dead!) - every one I looked at looked exactly the same. It's pretty obvious that design is a result of form and function. I don't know about blatant copies of a Jeep. Technically similar, yes. The 80" wheelbase is just inherited from the Jeep, but the body was quite different (Jeeps didn't get doors) and the chassis construction was different too. I think Rover did pretty much copy the transfer box though. 2011 110 USW

Perhaps the similarity is down to the fact that the Defender had evolved into the optimum shape for a utility vehicle of this type, rather than this just being a "blatant copy". All it is really is a simple 2-box shape, which maximises internal space.
You could equally say that the G-Wagen, early Toyota LC, Daihatsu, Santana, USPS CJ Jeeps, and many other classic successful 4x4 utility vehicles are all blatant copies of each other. Form and function. |

Of course it’s a blatant copy. That is Grenadier’s business model. Build the model Land Rover no longer produce and take the customers they no longer want. WARNING.

Exactly my point. And this is shameless IMHO. They could have achieved the same without copying the design of the Defender the way they did. I am pretty sure there will be some more lawsuits forthcoming... And no, a Defender does not look like a Jeep does not look like a Pajero does not look like a Land Cruiser does not look like a G Wagon... it doesn't have to, just as a Porsche doesn't look like a Ferrari just because they both have a good aerodynamics and are both sports cars... I wonder what the people would have said if a Chinese car company would have done the same? |

The "copy or not copy" is of complete irrelevance (in the absence of a law suit).
What actually matters is: will it do the job it is designed for, will it appeal to the market it is aimed at, and will it be affordable in that market? Why on earth are we discussing design? Leave that to Gerry, for heavens sake! |
