United Kingdom 2008 Defender 130 Puma 2.4 HCPU Barolo Black
Defender 110 2.2 2013 Gearbox
Afternoon all,

Have a 2013 110 Double cab Defender.

It had a new clutch about 6 months ago and with it a new clutch release bearing.

Then a few weeks ago i noticed that there was a worn bearing noise when you lifted/engaged the clutch in neutral. I pulled the gearbox and replaced the clutch release bearing again. But it has come back worse than ever.

When the vehicle is cold its ok but when its up to temp its quite loud when you engage the clutch/lift the pedal.

I have tried the stop the engine trick to see if its the springs on the clutch but its fine.

Will it be the input shaft bearing on the gearbox? Will it be worth getting the transfer box remanufactured at the same time if the bearing has gone?

TIA

When you press the clutch pedal, the clutch release bearing is working, and all gearbox bearings would stop or at least slow down. All gearbox bearings will stop once you engage a gear and the vehicle is still stationary.

On the other hand, the input shaft is rotating, but so is the layshaft and all the gears inside the gearbox when the clutch pedal is released. With clutch pedal released, the clutch release bearing is not rotating (at least not under load).

So from your description I am afraid it could be the gearbox.

Have you dropped the oil to check the quality of the oil? If you re fill it, everyone states to refill 2.2liters. My manual says 2.4liters (2012). 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
