White/Grey Smoke -Start Up & Strong Diesel Smell When Dr
Hi all,

I have recently had the glow plugs replaced at huge cost in my 2005 TD5 to improve acceleration. It seems to have worked and is better but I am still starting the car 2 to 3 times in the morning when starting the car. The weather here is hot all the time so this cannot be it.

There is also grey smoke immediately coming out of the exhaust after the car has started up. Any thoughts?

Second item - which although the car has been back in the garage lots and lots and lots of times, still smells of strong diesel when driving it. The garage clearly are not able to diagnose the issue!

Yours chokingly a very baffled 110 TD5 driver!

Fuel leak into cylinder or water leak into cylinder , lack of compression?

Is vehicle pressurising expansion bottle?

Is the grey definitely smoke or clouds/vapour

is it using engine oil.

Does the smell of fuel stay with you on say an hours drive or it it just there after starting?

Changing glow plugs is unlikely to improve acceleration unless a plug was missing. Cheers

Injector seals?
Oil in the red plug at the ECU?

Thanks JST and Excossack. I was hoping the glow plugs would improve start up. Noted regarding the acceleration. Just worn out so replaced.

I will have a look at the seals, oil in the red plug at the ECU (no check engine light on though), and MAF sensor.

The smell of diesel stays on in the car although I do short journeys, so maybe the car needs a good run.

The entire engine was flushed out due an incorrectly installed liquid oil gasket resulting in a mess of oil and coolant mixing together but this was all cleared up.

Check the fuel pressure regulator is not leaking as this can cause a strong smell of diesel in the cab and if it’s causing a pressure drop hard starting

l had a strong smell of diesel fumes in my 2005 110 when l first bought it.
l never really got to the bottom of it, tried all manner of things, but for some reason it no longer does it. lt seemed to be worse when the heater was set to hot, leading me to change the heater/bulkhead seal but that didn't cure it.

Replacing the CAT seemed to make a difference but it's an expensive option, l've got a spare CAT down pipe that was bought new and only did 12,000 miles if you want to try that.
