Would appreciate thoughts on this TD5 currently for sale

Looks good, a few cosmetics with bubbling paint at the back and around door handles, ripped passenger seat, but MOT history has nothing horrendous. Price seems reasonable.

On the face of it, it seems to have scrubbed up rather well. Looks nice Thumbs Up

You just need to check the big ticket items - chassis, bulkhead. No amount of polish and back to black can hide issues on these.

Malta 2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 CSW Santorini Black
Looks nice. Can only see some minor cracking on the windscreen seal, and perhaps some bubbling on the frame. Rear cross member seems not to be straight, but can be the picture misleading.

Do not know if it affects you, but vehicle is classed as M1. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Chassis looks pretty good, no rust or welding. Then again, it could all be covered in waxoyl.

Seriously tempted.

Good spot. That would explain why 2 of the 4 rear seats appear to have been removed. Doesn't really bother me as I don't plan on transporting any sports teams, just a bike and few spares.

Where did you find that out, just out of interest?

I'd be more concerned if the crossmember did appear to be straight, since it would be a strong indication that it had been replaced. The late production chassis (TD5 and TDCi) assembly process resulted in bowed rear crossmembers, which fact was recognised by LR and resulted in the old-style welded body-mounting tabs being replaced by the bolt-on angle bracket, since this is the only way to match a straight tub to a bowed crossmember.

I really don't understand the connection you have made between the EWVTA class and the number of seats and reduction thereof. I would have thought a much more significant consideration was the VED, which is around double on an M1 Defender compared to an N1.

I found it on a government website:
*M1 – as defined in EC Directive 70/156 “vehicles used for the carriage of passengers and comprising no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat”. CO2 emission is ascertained as part of the Type Approval process, and is recorded on individual vehicle’s Certificate of Conformity.

I've seen prices from £8k to 20k during my search for a TD5, obviously with different specs, history and condition.

It won't have had any seats removed, since it will have been built as a seven seater to allow M1 type approval.

I would still rate the killer VED as a bigger issue!

It looks a decent enough vehicle to me.
