In a resource starved future it is going to be seen as ever more unacceptable. People are going to have to change their habits hugely, live closer to where they work, give up trips from Cornwall to see friends in Inverness for the weekend and give up a dependency on oil based products.
Unless of course you are rich, a member of the royals or an MP, it's only the plebs that will suffer. By then I will be dead so no need to worry on that score but it's the fault of government that people don't live near their place of work as this and previous governments don't support UK industry which ends up closing down or moving abroad. I honestly don't believe that, in 15 years, the charging infrastructure will be ready for mass EV ownership.
We have been told (by BT/Openreach) that where we live won't be getting fibre broadband until at least 2040 - yet the electricity infrastructure is supposed to support charging large amounts of electric vehicles by 2035? Add to the fact that we live in a tourist area, so the population rises from about 1,200 people in the winter to around 50,000 in the summer. That's a massive strain on the electricity infrastructure if the majority of those people arrive in EVs. (90% of people arrive in personal transport currently, and I can't see this changing as our nearest train station is 15 miles and 2 buses away, not ideal for carrying large amounts of holiday luggage) Our nearest power station is 57 miles away as the crow flies, that's a big run of cable to upgrade! Where are the funds going to come from to upgrade this system? We surely can't be the only rural area with the same predicament? I can't see it happening myself, not for a long time. There is no way that this will ever come to fruition, they have already missed by a country mile all targets on hybrid sales as the manufactures and public realise the tech is not where it was forecast, the infrastructure is missing.
A motorway services in rush hour would need a couple of hundred charging points at least...... never going to happen. |

Personally,I can only think that just to be around in 2035 would be one hell of an achievement. So I really cannot consider any mode of transport to be other than pure electric or hydrogen. I fear that to emigrate would only result in a like for like environment or a third world 'down the toilet' economy.
The younger generation will be in charge and one can only have hope that their efforts are more successful that our pathetic attempts which have brought us to where we are now. I can see in the not too distant future a rapid step up in the war to remove older (it seems anything over three years seems to be a definition at the moment) vehicles from the road through increasing taxation, bans in town and city centres. As fuel consumption reduces availability will start to be an issue (already a problem as fuel companies move to E10 (I think that's what it is called) which is not old car friendly at all.
All this means second hand car sales will become a nightmare, who will want a Defender which is will be expensive to tax, limited where it can drive and pay inflated fuel costs. Add to this the social pressure (I already feel it) of being seen to drive something sooooooo environmentally unfriendly.  On the other hand who will want to buy a second hand electric car with a battery which costs £1000's and by the time you get it has well past its sell by date. Add to that the Government will have lost a fortune in fuel duty and something very expensive will have to replace it. EV drivers enjoy 'cheap' motoring while you can as it is surely going to end soon
Well thats my early morning rant over then. In 15 years time Ill be too old to worry about it and in the meantime I will keep driving my Defender until for what ever reason I cant anymore....................  2010 XS USW

This is a political statement, has nothing to do with what will really happen and is far enough into the future to pin the blame elsewhere.
Politically, it's perfect - it's far enough ahead to not have to damage the economy immediately, but close enough to be able to tell the likes of Extinction Rebellion to STFU. |

I can't envisage somewhere like Alaska banning infernal combustion engines. A further attraction is a very low population density. Plus wild wolves and bear. |

I’m of the agreement that this is purely political at this stage. There’s not a hope currently that the infrastructure is going to be able to support that level of EV use.
Unless enormous changes are made to our grid very quickly we will struggle to generate and distribute that much energy. I don’t think they’d be able to spend the money quick enough to allow those sort of changes. The only way I can see it working is to virtually remove the need to use vehicles like we currently do. Regular commutes to an office to sit behind a desk shouldn’t make sense in this age. |
