But what is their definition of "sales" ? Deposits on cars received at dealers, Cars actually in production, Cars onboard a ship or transport, Cars delivered to dealers, or Cars actually delivered to customers and thus fully paid ?
If the latter (as I suspect it should be) then "sales" will certainly look woefully low, as for example there were only a handful of cars in Australia in October - there are few more now (mine amongst them), but lots still on order and due to arrive. The impacts of Covid on the factory will take a long time to work their way through - much greater than just 4 months of stopped production. I also think we are at risk of over analysing at this stage. My dealer has told me that JLR here have had a very strong year of sales, not even taking any Covid factor into account - ie: better sales volumes than last year and that they have plenty of Defender orders in the mix. Obviously I am aware that no dealer will ever tell you they are doing badly, and this is Australia, not UK, US, SA etc.....but it tells a different story to what LRSpain004 is gleaning from the blog info. I guess time will tell. [Just adding this note to my initial reply - that I realise this blog info is only referring to UK and EU sales, not the rest of the world - but the headline of this post is implying that these low sales can be extrapolated worldwide, and that is probably incorrect] There is no doubt that it's a great car, and I believe it will sell well - even if it's a slow burner. In the words of Corporal Jones "Don't panic! Don't panic!" |

Cars registered for the first time by make and model, United Kingdom - updated to include 2020 Q3.
The data is difficult to pull details from on the basis of in, out, so it's open to a degree of interpretation, especially on what are actually new Defenders; but I gave it an honest go. Click image to enlarge https://www.gov.uk/government/organisation...statistics |

By my maths, there's one every 83kmΒ² as an average, so don't blink or you'll miss your local one. or If the stat that there are 49,071 cities, towns, villages, hamlets and suburban areas in the UK. That's one new Defender for every 17 villages... |

Is your dealer telling you a tall story... "Breaking down Australian car sales statistics by manufacturer reveals Audi's sales are down 11.8 per cent so far this year, with Land Rover (down 23.1 per cent) BMW (down 2.4 per cent), Mercedes-Benz (down 13.1 per cent), Lexus (down 0.2 per cent) all feeling the pain. In fact, of the major premium brands, it's really only Alfa Romeo that has recorded positive growth year on year, owing mostly to the small base expected of a recently launched brand." https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-advice/au...ures-70982 And then actual figures for Land Rover YTD: 2019 ~ 8,879 2020 ~ 6,339 https://www.caradvice.com.au/913476/vfacts...ince-2003/ In case the confused dealer was thinking Jaguar was pulling all the weight: E-Pace β 59 Dec, 662 YTD F-Pace β 21 Dec, 311 YTD F-Type β 10 Dec, 42 YTD I-Pace β 4 Dec, 70 YTD XE β 5 Dec, 196 YTD XF β 3 Dec, 35 YTD XJ Series β 0 Dec, 10 YTD Jaguar Total β 102 Dec, 1326 YTD For December: Defender β 169 Discovery β 71 Discovery Sport β 80 Range Rover β 8 Range Rover Evoque β 173 Range Rover Sport β 201 Range Rover Velar β 62 Land Rover Total β 764 "Some of the more notable sales decreases in 2020 compared to 2019 included the Range Rover (down 51.3%), the Land Rover Discovery (down 34.6 %), the Range Rover Sport (down 25.4%)" https://www.unsealed4x4.com.au/ford-ranger...a-in-2020/
Nitra was actually shut for less than 2 months...unless that's JLR being creative with the numbers again... |

It links to an Automotive News report that I can't access as I am not a subscriber, but apparently sales of the new Defender here in the US are doing quite well, 9K+ vehicles sold in less than 7 months, despite pandemic and supply shortages. 2020 NAS Defender 110 HSE 5-seater / Silver / Khaki / Black Pack / Black Roof / Satin Film / Cold Pack / Off-Road Pack / Advanced OR Pack / Comfort + Convenience Pack / Sirius + HD radio / HUD / Meridian Surround |
