That’s how I’m looking at it, bodyshop is plan b. The hole I have is near the bottom corner that meets the drivers door . The hole is only about 20mm across but once i’ve chopped out all scab it will be a bit bigger. I’ll take pics as I go and may make a post of it. Thanks for answering my questions

Ok then, round 2!! Wing sanded back again with 800grit wet. Wing off this time, which took about 45 minutes and a couple of skinned knuckles. It’s a faff, but not the end of the world. “Professional” quality spray booth set up ready to start in the morning.

Whenever possible, I spray my panels lying flat. To minimize orange peel, the paint has to be laid thick enough but thin enough that it does not run. I use an HVLP 1.4mm tip spraygun, but I guess should be similar techniques with rattle cans.
If there is an accidental run, it is not the end of the world. It can be flattened down and polished once cured. Before sanding the run, and to avoid thinning the paint next to the run, apply a thin layer of body filler, and sand the whole lot until the body filler is gone. Great info dinnu, thanks for that. Laying flat would be easier for me.

and by the way, the nice thing when you spray small panels removed from the car, is that if you get a run, you can sort it right away by tilting/flipping the panel in the opposite direction to the run. That is the reason people can see me dancing with the panels after I shoot my paint. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Paint went on well. Clear coat went on well with no mishaps or solvent pop, but plenty of orange peel. Out with the sanding blocks, cutting compound and polish tomorrow.
Will using 2K from a rattle can always produce orange peel? Was using frost 2K and was about £22 or so. Too cheap? |

Attempt 2. Better, no mistakes but even after hours of sanding, cutting and polishing, the peel is still there. Looks great from 4’ away!
If your reading this hoping you can get a pro finish at home with rattle cans, well you can’t. I’ve put about 20hrs of labour into this and £50-60 worth of gear. I’ve got a 4’ finish but the question is can I live with it? I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to, it will eat away at me every time I see the wing. Click image to enlarge |

Is it just the orange peel that’s the problem?

Yes. Everything else looks good. Not sure how well you can see it in this pic.

Did you use a mechanical polisher/buffer with your cutting compound? Ive had good results with Farecla G3 Compound, carefully used with a wool pad on a polisher.

I’ve had exactly this before on a slate grey 90 bonnet painted with a rattle can - 900 or 1200 grit wet and dry paper used wet and pre soaked to soften it followed up by cutting compound got rid of the orange peel totally - just go slow, take your time and make sure you do not go through the paint 2017 Range Rover L405 Vogue SE V8 Diesel #16

Co1, you can get polishing pads and attachments to go on an electric drill? Can do the job as good (not as good as an orbital polisher though - orbitals are very forgiving in preventing swirl marks). Not sure if you can get decent results by hand, unless you have hands of Popeye. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
