Have you checked around the injectors for any signs of leaking. Could be the injector seals worn or the clamp bolt slightly stretched and loose until it warms up.
There’s also various heat shields and brackets on the back of the engine that have been known to come loose or crack. Worth giving these a check over too. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html Instagram - @r22oyp Roy |

I have checked all around the injectors and there is no signs of movement or a leak.
It’s most noticeable when it’s been really cold overnight. I will try and have a better listen from where it’s coming from but it almost seems low down at the back of the engine. I will try and get under it and have a look at the heat shields as suggested. I have just replaced the oil but this didn’t change anything. Could it be a bad hydraulic lifter? Your thoughts appreciated. |

Doesn’t sound like this does it?
Or Definitely engine?? I had another noise similar the other day it was one of the idler pulleys had gone, simple 5 minute job of removing the fan belt and just unbolting the old pulley and bolting a new one on, |

Definitely engine.
It sounds like the ticking you get when you have a stone in the tyre, but instead of changing the frequency with speed, it changes with RPM..? |

Just a note, when it’s cold, the ticking noise is accompanied with the engine hunting about 50rpm up and down?

Has it been re-mapped? If so who did it?

Just wondering - mine makes exactly the same noise (I suspect) as the description matches and I have an Alive remap. It only does it very rarely though even when cold. Not particularly happy with the map so going to go back to standard - will see if the problem follows the cal.

I have my original ECU so I can just swap it out.
Will give it a go and see if the noise changes at all. |

Yes mine has a noise only when cold BAS 150 remap, I notice it when cold till the engine warms up, a bit like a light knocking sound, that increases with engine RPM, I am thinking it is the BAS tune settings for when the engine is cold.
How did you go with fitting the original ECU and the noise? |

I get this on my unmapped engine. Worse when it’s cold ambient temp, most noticeable on cold start but I think there all the time.
Any tips on checking the injectors over, or anything else to check? Same as Yannis, noise increases frequency with RPM and is definitely a ticking/tapping noise. 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2 |

I get this too on a 2015 2.2. Mine hasn't been remapped either.
